#120 to #57 - anon (09/01/2015) [-]
Dark stain? Man, you are lucky. Mine was a spectrum of visible and invisible stains; stains of all shapes and dimension.

A very descriptive title for that chapter of my past is: stains;gate. "a dark stain on my past". Dude, stains have prevailed to the extent there was no more past, only stain.

User avatar #119 to #63 - emiyashirou ONLINE (09/01/2015) [-]
Najimi is intimacy. The full word he was probably looking for is osananajimi 幼馴染み, which is childhood friend.
User avatar #129 to #119 - iridium (09/02/2015) [-]
When I looked it up it means old friend. The Osana part specifies "childhood".

Anytime someone wants to tell me I could never understand cultural appropriation, I'll kindly bring up how one of Japan's most popular and profitable gaming franchises features a short, fat, gibberish-speaking Italian plumber with a big bushy mustache who loves eating mushrooms and fighting "Goombas." Not that I believe cultural appropriation is considered a rational concept

If we go with the definition of it being of taking credit for and profiting off a culture that is not yours, then that can be ascribed to every culture. An African swordsmith making katanas is appropriating Japanese culture. A russian baker making zeppoli is appropriating Italian culture. Industrialization is heavily rooted in European white culture. In that case, the Japanese selling cars and computers that are mass produced is appropriating white culture. Dr. Dre, an African-American, sells his own brand of Beats headphones, headphones also being mass produced technology invented by a white man, and thus, is appropriation.
However, who is to say that cultures being appropriated did not appropriate others? Are Italian pastries purely Italian pastries, or did we adapt them from someone else's culture in a way that better suited the tastes of Italians? Are dao swords solely a Chinese invention, or were they adapted from some earlier weapon in a way that best suited Chinese fighting tactics? Were the first humans who invented fire culturally appropriated by every other tribe who learned from them to make fire and use it for their own benefit? This idea of 'cultural appropriation' can be traced back to the dawn of man.
This line of reasoning has lead me to the conclusion that cultural appropriation was a term invented to demonize cultural diffusion, the process by which cultures mix, evolve, and adapt aspects of other cultures that are beneficial to them. I don't see this as morally objectionable, as much as I see it the natural process of human evolution, learning and adapting from one another in the interest of profit, whether that profit is monetary compensation, moral satisfaction, emotional satisfaction, entertainment, religious fulfillment, etc. Some might argue that monetary profit, particularly, from cultural diffusion is objectionable because when the majority of people buy into it, it eliminates the source culture in favor of a new "corrupted" one that has lost its meaning. However, aren't cultural traditions that have persevered simply on popularity corrupted, in that case? Popularity contests are simply another form of "buying into" new cultural traditions. These new cultural norms are not lacking in meaning, they simply hold a new meaning in the eyes of those who have willingly perpetuated it by "voting" for it, through their dollars or through their repetition of these new adaptations.
Frankly, the idea that cultural diffusion should be restricted to me sounds like people trying to maintain some idea of "cultural purity." Which sounds a lot like segregation.
#130 to #35 - anon (09/05/2015) [-]
These Social Justice fags seem to confuse cultural diffusion with cultural appropriation. Appropriation is when a college kid dresses like an Indian for Halloween. On the 1-10 scale of big deals, 1 being not, 10 being a ******* big deal. Its about a .5. Diffusion is the primary thing they are complaining about, yet they don't realize it because they're morons. Diffusion is perfectly natural and is actually quite healthy for humanity.

And honestly, as long as they aren't done in offense they can be quite amusing to look at and a bit humbling.

It was worth the read but felt to me like wasted effort writing,as just a comment on a site.

Tl;dr version : A bunch of people project different meanings onto things and like to feel important. Riding around on their high horse, slapping those who agree on the back then slapping the rest with their opinion sticks. Roping **** into a category of what should be also narrows their view on culture ironically. These idiots stand in their own way.

Not to mention the whole ******** about you can't speak a language if it isn't your native tongue. Like that one post about stop speaking Spanish if you aren't of Hispanic descent. That kind of bollocks would ruin every form of communication between people from different countries if person A isn't allowed to speak English and person B can't speak German

If I remember correctly, a museum was holding kimono wednesdays or something like that, where they displayed traditional Japanese art and taught about Japanese culture, And a bunch of idiots came in saying that it was imperialist and whatever for a western museum to display Japanese art, despite the whole thing being organized by local Japanese women.
