Hello Funnyjunk, I'm new here I recently went on a holiday back to Japan. I would like to share the pictures I took as well as some history and culture about my country.

For starters, this is my Shiba Inu, he is much fat and such lazy. He is called Leonardo but in Japanese it's more like Reonarudo.

This is a statue of Hachikō outside Shibuya station. The story of Hachikō is that he always went to wait for his master, Hidesaburo Ueno, at Shibuya Station for the 4 o clock train. Even after Ueno died, Hachikō still went and waited every day for the next 10 years, and when Hachikō was found dead, they made this bronze statue outside the station.

This is the Genbaku Dōmu, or Atomic Bomb Dome, in Hiroshima. At 8:15 a.m. on 6 August 1945, the atomic bomb Little Boy detonated over Hiroshima, with the hypocenter of the atomic explosion being only 160m from the dome. It was the only building standing directly after the blast in the area.

This is the Tokyo Skytree, which has a height of 634m. It is currently the 2nd tallest structure in the world by 195.8m, under the Burj Khalifa. It illuminates at night, alternating between 2 patterns -Iki (Stylish - blue) and Miyabi (Elegant - purple). It is also completely earthquake-proof (I hope).

Finally, this is the Toyosato Elementary School underneath a picture of the Sakuragaoka High School from the popular anime 'K-ON!'. Toyosato Elementary School is no longer used as a school and instead now is used for offices and as a place for parents to bring their children to play in. When I went it was completely empty and 3spoopy5me. The school in K-ON is practically identical to the real-life counterpart in Toyosato, Kyoto. It's also a bitch to get to as Toyosato is in the middle of nowhere.

It's must've been fun to spend a holiday in Japan...

Too bad i don't speak japaneese
#17 to #4 - OtisMcWonderful ONLINE (02/03/2015) [-]
Japanese isn't that hard to learn to speak. Writing is slightly more difficult. Hiragana and katakana can get you by. Kanji is ******* insane, but don't be scared of it though. The average Japanese person doesn't even know every single kanji character. If you want to have fun practice, play some older games. They mostly use hiragana and katakana since 1) they were usually designed for kids to be able to play can't have any complicated kanji that children couldn't read and 2) kanji would have been near impossible at low resolutions anyway.

Of course, you should be able to get by pretty well even without speaking Nihongo, assuming you stick to metropolitan areas like Tokyo. A fair amount of people can speak English well enough to converse with you, if only on a basic level.

I say all of this as someone that started to learn, but decided that it was a useless skill for me and quit. So take it as you will.

I don't even understand hiragana
#25 to #24 - OtisMcWonderful ONLINE (02/04/2015) [-]
Well that's the way it works. If you don't understand something, and want to understand it, learn how to. Also, if you know some romaji, you can use the Windows language bar to change your language to output hiragana while you're typing romaji.

すごいですね?

Japanese isn't that difficult to learn... I think... it's my first language so I wouldn't know
#13 to #5 - summin (02/03/2015) [-]
Of coarse its not hard to lean it if its your native language, but for rest of us westerners its a difficult language to learn. 2 alphabets and at least 3k kanji symbols to learn, different sentence structure, single kanji can have few meanings. Well you know better how Japanese language functions.
User avatar #15 to #13 - mamisasazaki [OP](02/03/2015) [-]
Katakana and Hiragana are easiest to learn. but for Kanji, it's more about learning the useful ones.. I don't use many at all so I keep forgetting them.
I guess it is difficult to learn most Kanji AND remember them..

It's not all that easy. I'm trying to learn it but, sadly, with no luck.

Aw man that really sucks.. are there not any courses/tutors near your area?
#14 to #12 - flintjunkie (02/03/2015) [-]

Japanese with that good level of English seems fishy.

OP, you don't live in Japan, do you?
User avatar #44 to #43 - mamisasazaki [OP](02/04/2015) [-]
I live in London now and I am half English, hope that explains it. Sorry for any confusion.
#45 to #44 - daorien (02/04/2015) [-]
Yeah, that explains a lot. You don't need to apologize, I was just curious.

so that dome...

how radioactive is it?
if it is.
User avatar #41 to #40 - mamisasazaki [OP](02/04/2015) [-]
Background radiation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki is near enough the world average background radiation now. Living there for a long time near the time of the blast would obviously give you harmful amounts of radiation, though.

Yeah it is, and it isn't the only time something like that happened
For example, Fido waited at a bus stop for his owner, who died when the allies bombed Borgo San Lorenzo (Italy) during WWII, for 14 years
Greyfriars Bobby guarded the grave of his owner for 14 years (This happened in Edinburgh)
Shep waited for his owner at the train station of Fort Benton for almost 6 years, but he got hit by a train which could not stop and died

Looks like there's more Ritsu than anyone else. Good.

Too bad there's a disappointingly small amount of English on it though.

The school's in a really remote place, sometimes you have other people there but the last time I went it was completely empty.
One woman runs a shop there that sells unique K-ON merch though, and she's always there.
They also have every single K-ON figure ever, and replicas of all their instruments
#22 to #21 - OtisMcWonderful ONLINE (02/04/2015) [-]
I guess a lot of people aren't fans of K-On! as much as I am, so they aren't willing to make the trip.

Those figures would kill me. K-On! is the only show I've ever looked into getting figures for, and it was after they had been discontinued just my luck . So the cost of having to import discontinued figures really put a damper on those plans. They aren't that expensive by themselves, but getting the whole sets as I planned would have been more than I'm willing to spend on something that essentially collects dust on a shelf. So I just had to settle for making a tiny Ritsu papercraft.

I own 23 K-ON figures
Buying them from Book-Off (2nd hand) stores is really cheap, and then I just get bubble wrap from Daiso (100 Yen) stores and bam, fill my suitcases with them
User avatar #48 to #37 - OtisMcWonderful ONLINE (02/04/2015) [-]
Yeah. That's not much of an option for me. There's no Book-Off anywhere near me . Their Amazon page is pretty useless and only has books. The only local store I had that possibly could have sold them closed down years ago. Remember when Domo was really popular? That's how long it's been since they shut down.

fixed some typos
