the good thing about refridgerators and freezers is that they're sealed and insulated, mainly for energy efficiency. Stop the heat getting in, means less energy is needed to keep it cool.

A good side effect of that though, is that if your power goes out, stuff in your freezer will be fine for a while, sometimes a few days, as long as you don't open it.

what I did was put it all in the window sills, that way the food is still cold and I can heat most of the house without it spoiling.

Other than the obvious "store it outside" that everyone is mentioning,
Why did you buy perishable food for stocking up?

Buy pre-cooked canned stuff. Then it will keep, and if the power goes out, you don't have to worry about cooking it.
