Electricity passing through a conductor generates what is called an electromagnetic field.
Electromagnetic fields act similarly to normal magnetic fields. That is to say they attract ferromagnetic objects and objects or of the opposite polarity while repelling objects and fields of the same polarity.

The railgun passes the electrical current through the rails and projectile, generating a field between the rails and behind the projectile, these fields are of the same polarity and as such repel eachother forcing the projectile to accelerate.
The coilgun passes a pulse of electrical current through coils of wire around the barrel, generating a field inside it that attracts the projectile, tugging it forward in a swift burst.

TL;DR
All conductors are magnets that only work with electricity running through them.
The railgun passes electricity into one side of the barrel, through the projectile and out the other side of the barrel in order to make the barrel repel the projectile.
The coilgun passes a burst of electricity through a loop around the barrel to tug the projectile forwards.

I've actually got an education in electrical systems and electronics though, even before that I've had an interest in electromagnetic weaponry and have spent almost as many hours researching them as I have wasted on Funnyjunk and I have made a semi high-powered (400-coulomb) coilgun as a project, so I didn't suddenly become an expert, I sort of am one.

As it curves around, the magnetic energy causes the second smaller magnet to speed up sending it around and into the projectile sending it flying. Thats my super scientific explanation that probably didn't help at all.

Holy ****! That's awesome! As far as I can tell the first set of magnets are hitting the ball, the ball then travels around the larger magnet to the back where the second set of magnets repels the ball back forward. Science!

actually, the second set of magnets pushes the first set to the side of the set of three main magnets, the first set then goes to the most attractive side for itself, pushing the ball out of its way thus propelling the ball forward

the magnet being moved by the finger goes to where the second magnet is, ans the second magnet shoots around to the top, you can see it vibrating. On the way, it hits the ball
