Sleep occurs in cycles of about 90 minutes each. You start in the light sleep stages one and two, then the deep sleep stages of 3 and 4, and then into REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, at which point you can either dream easily or wake up easily. Because of this, if limited by time, you can aim for a 3 hour nap, which is generally restful since you are waking up after the second sleep cycle. This can hold you over for a night-you can wake up relativley rested on the miminmum time investment
