Yes, but that's not the situation here. It would be if your name was spelled like "Gary," but actually pronounced like Jerry, but people still pronounced it with a hard G. Sure it's an excusable mistake the first time or two, but after you ******* tell them the correct pronunciation, and they still say it wrong... then that just makes them either an idiot or an asshole.

There's no rule that says that acronyms must be pronounced with respect to how their words are pronounced.

You just made that up to substantiate your argument. I pronounce in Gif. Why? you may ask.

Because that is how my brain first read it when I first saw the word. My brain saw the acronym and decided that it sounded like JIF.

You can go and say that it's pronounced GIF, but don't make some half assed rules that make your interpretation more logical.

While there is no rule, there is still a little thing called "logic". Because when that guy said that its pronounced "jif", he pulled that right out of his arse, as there is absolutely nothing in whole goddamn language that would point to that pronunciation.

Considering G stands for graphic, it is more logical to say gif.

You're right, there are absolutely no rules governing how to pronounce these acronyms, beyond common sense. Some are pronounced better as a full word, for example GIF or FLAC, and some are impossible to pronounce like CFG or MKV. And then you have mixed pronunciation in something like JPEG (jay-peg). Also there are one that can be pronounced but most people (or it could be just me) choose not to, like AVI (I say A-V-I instead of avi) or WAV (not wave). I've even heard PNG be pronounced as 'ping' or EXE as 'eksi'.

Of course, you could be a tosser and say EXE as "executable file" or PNG as "portable network graphic", etc but nobody does that. (Except when they do)

Acronyms are pronounced as words of their own instead of relying on the pronunciation of the words it was based upon. "Gif", "Graphics", "Interchange" and "Format" are all considered separate words.

Here's a few that might help you rethink your logic.

Sorry, posted without pasting the link.

Here, each acronym is pronounced according to your logic, yet they are not considered the right pronunciation. Of course, my stance remain unchanged from my comment way below there (As long as the message is clear, it doesn't matter what the pronunciation is.) but, claiming that "gif" is rightfully pronounced "giff" because "Graphic" has a hard G is flawed.

thank you for saying the most important thing i was thinking looking through all these comments.

"As long as the message is clear, it doesn't matter what the pronunciation is."

each person that responded to this doesn't seem to understand that i wasn't quoting a rule or anything else. I was stating my logic as to why i pronounce it the way i do. I never said that either way is the proper way to say it. In fact in my opinion there is no proper pronunciation because it itself isnt a word and is therefore open to wide discussion and interpretation.

Also i dont think anyone has right to say it has to be pronounced either way ( not even the creator). Let alone the fact that it doesn't matter in anyway because we are typing 3-4 characters on the internet to each other not saying it out loud.

tl;dr It's a file extention it doesnt need a proper pronunciation.

There is no rule in the English language that states that acronyms have to be pronounced according to how each individual letter in each of the words that make the acronym up.

Go ahead. Find it. It's nonexistent. You and your "GIF" buddies made it up so you can further support your argument.

Earlier you said that acronyms are according to how the individual words are pronounced.

Now you're saying what sounds better is the key determinant.

You keep changing and contradicting your own previous arguments.

What "sounds" better is not objective, and even if it was, I could easily say that JIF sounds better than GIF, because if it didn't, then why would the creators call it that to begin with?

I hate having to present my case whenever something like this is posted I pronounce it GIF (hard G) for one primary reason, the .Jif format already exists, if you have two formats of computer files pronounced the same way, it leads to confusion, logically the .Gif file should be pronounced with a hard G in order to circumvent said confusion.

Except there's no confusion at all.

Nobody uses the .jif format. We're better off calling it a draw in which 50 percent say it's JIF and the other half says it's GIF.
