In taiwan there were two guys who went to the same college and both wanted the favor of the same lady.
So obviously like real men they decided to settle the dispute by playing chicken on their mopeds. They would start at opposite ends of a straight road and drive toward each other and the first person to turn away lost, and the other guy would get the girl.
Neither of them turned and they crashed head-on into each other at 80km/h. Neither were wearing helmets and both died.
When police interviewed the girl she said she hadn't been interested in either of them.

There were never such a news/story in taiwan you ******** , if there is every taiwanese would know thanks to our news channel that broadcasts every stupid **** happening on the island. Also owning a car in taiwan's pretty inconvenience unless you own/rented parking space in your home/work since there arn't much space for public parking, those parking slots are no doubt expensive.

Everyone freaking out about how stupid this is is taking death a little too seriously. Is it the action I would have done? No, though I can respect their motives. Their parents were trying to control their lives, so they took it into their own hands to send the message that they don't give a **** . They did it in a much more drastic, and permanent way than any of us would do it, but it still sends the message.

In fact, it went ahead and tacked on a secondary message of "You tried to control us, now you get to have neither of us." which is just a more dire version of the "If you truly love something, let it go" philosophy. They showed the most perfect form of spite to the people who brought on those feelings.

If anything, that's one of the only good reasons anyone should have to kill themselves.
User avatar #84 to #45 - playerdous (05/01/2014) [-]
I get it but they could have thought it through more. Such as running away and pretending they had died. That way the family gets the point and the couple gets to live. But, I imagine this couple is no more intelligent then the dumb couples today.

...taking death a little too seriously? Dude/woman/androgyne, seriously, what the hell. There were literally a million other options they could have taken that didn't involve their rotting bodies washing up on a riverbank.

If every emotional teenage couple offed themselves because their parents didn't agree with the relationship, there would be a ******* outcry.

In Asian cultures, it's expected that you take care of your family. Kids from 'Good' families are often given a leg-up. People want to be associated with good families, so they do favours for these 'good' families, ensuring the future success of their children. This is made possible for the kids because of the great achievements of their ancestors and siblings. So they are expected to return the favour. Otherwise, they are selfish and scorning the priveliges of their upbringing.

So in an Asian society, a suicide like this would actually achieve something. These two decided that their marriage was more precious than their family honour. But in the society they grew up in, that would never be acceptable. So they killed themselves.

Consider this:
You're taught that family is everything.
You meet someone that you actually consider more important than your family.
But you have to make a decision = leave your family and live with the guilt of dishonouring them. Or leave this person and live without them forever.
I think I'd drown myself, too. I couldn't live with the guilt. And I have no self-control. I could never deny myself something I wanted.
User avatar #50 to #49 - lolollo (05/01/2014) [-]
It was their decision to kill themselves to spite their parents, and the consequences they have to face from doing so, if there are consequences to be faced, are theirs to face, not yours. What is it, do you have a kid who you think is going to kill themselves?

Even sadder when you take the allegory into account:

"The red string of fate, also referred to as the red thread of destiny, red thread of fate, and other variants, is an East Asian belief originating from Chinese legend...The two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of time, place, or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break. This myth is similar to the Western concept of soulmates or a destined flame."

In Western cultures, it is more important to preserve your own happiness before anyone else's happiness. Alternatively, in a lot of Asian cultures, the family is the priority - not the individual.
The two cultures are ridiculously different, but I think they're equally selfish. You could either put yourself first, stepping on others as you raise yourself higher, or you could destroy individual dreams and lives in the hopes of raising your family's social standing. Either way, someone gets trampled.
I want to add - I'm well aware that these ideals are not fixed. People don't always follow them (if at all). Also, I'm not bashing either culture. It doesn't matter what people do, someone is always going to get trampled on. But it's not intentional - I think a lot of the time, people just don't question it.

So a lot of people are acting shocked, but I don't think it's all that surprising. It's just sad - especially for the families.
User avatar #129 to #70 - mrselfdestruct (05/01/2014) [-]

That may be true, but that's just because we've been influenced by western ideals.
