In taiwan there were two guys who went to the same college and both wanted the favor of the same lady.
So obviously like real men they decided to settle the dispute by playing chicken on their mopeds. They would start at opposite ends of a straight road and drive toward each other and the first person to turn away lost, and the other guy would get the girl.
Neither of them turned and they crashed head-on into each other at 80km/h. Neither were wearing helmets and both died.
When police interviewed the girl she said she hadn't been interested in either of them.

Thats fucking pathetic, they could have just moved, disowned their family, what the hell?

As an Asian, you only have as much respect as your family. Family values and family honour are incredibly important over there, to the extent that it is often the families that decide who their children will marry. Going against their wishes often does mean being disowned (though that level of strictness is decreasing, so there is hope). A disowned adult is effectively socially outcast as far as Asian communities are concerned (no matter where you are), so rather than being harassed and rejected for the rest of their lives, this poor couple (who probably didn't know where to go) took their lives.

A tragic event, but one of many.

But as I said, the traditions of Asian families is being toned down, particularly in urbanized areas of international interest, as communities are forced to confront and understand cultures from all of the world, and realize that there is a world outside of their traditions.

So the lovers killed both their families?
"the lovers took their lives"
"their" hints to "the couples' family"
right? then how can it only be two bodies? where did all the other bodies go? i think they have atleast 4 bodies?
AM I OVER THINKING THIS?!
User avatar #3 to #2 - ecalycptus ONLINE (04/30/2014) [-]
You should read it as "The lovers took their own lives".

Everyone freaking out about how stupid this is is taking death a little too seriously. Is it the action I would have done? No, though I can respect their motives. Their parents were trying to control their lives, so they took it into their own hands to send the message that they don't give a shit. They did it in a much more drastic, and permanent way than any of us would do it, but it still sends the message.

In fact, it went ahead and tacked on a secondary message of "You tried to control us, now you get to have neither of us." which is just a more dire version of the "If you truly love something, let it go" philosophy. They showed the most perfect form of spite to the people who brought on those feelings.

If anything, that's one of the only good reasons anyone should have to kill themselves.

Even sadder when you take the allegory into account:

"The red string of fate, also referred to as the red thread of destiny, red thread of fate, and other variants, is an East Asian belief originating from Chinese legend...The two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of time, place, or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break. This myth is similar to the Western concept of soulmates or a destined flame."

as sad as i want this to be, it's just plain out retarded that they took their own lives. i don't care about the "famiry honor" asian's seem to have either. this is nothing to kill yourself over. jesus christ.

picture irrelevant, it's just my laptop background that i decided to share cause i think it's pretty fuckin groovy.

You're two grown people, not 12 year olds that have to obey their parents. This was fucking retarded. You get absolutely no sympathy from me.

I await your butthurt.

It's China. Marrying with both families' approval is way more important than in the West where you can basically do what you want. Cultures are different in other places, try and accept that.
