Here in Southern California, Los Angeles was on fire this morning. I could see the huge cloud of smoke from the OC.

Literally half of Australia is on fire now...

But seriously, 2 days ago me and a few other people were driving to a carnival and we got caught in a traffic jam like, right next to a blazing fire on a mountain called Arthurs Seat. **** was already 40C and with the fires it felt like 60C

It's 35 out and I only wear a t-shirt... This has been quite warm weather compared to one night when it got down to -20 and my water pipes froze... You have it easy there.

California? Yeah, It's been like 70 where I live, I had to break out my heavy coat.
#58 to #14 - agena (01/17/2014) [-]
Bitch please, it's 14 degrees here (windchill of -2) and I merely put on a hoodie over my t-shirt today. Hell, it was 36 degrees earlier in the week and I was wearing shorts. I live in Nebraska. We range from -10 degrees to about 115 degrees throughout the year. That's not including windchills or humidity.
User avatar #60 to #58 - yutdollacwwwthree (01/17/2014) [-]
Same here.

When it was super-cold a couple weeks ago, I was in my shorts again this week, it was in the 20's
#64 to #60 - agena (01/17/2014) [-]
Nice. I especially love it when there's about a foot of snow on the ground and it's a particularly warm day and I get to wander around in shorts and snow boots. I look pretty BA, especially when I have to carry my dog because she's too delicate of a beast to walk on the snow.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in six counties in the face of flooding rains and mounting snow from a storm that may be beneficial as well as destructive.

“The circumstances of these storms, by reason of their magnitude, are or are likely to be beyond the control of the services, personnel, equipment and facilities of any single county, or city,” Schwarzenegger said in his proclamation.

I live in California, and that probably was over reacted, but in California, it rarley snows. I'm 21 years old and it's never snowed anywhere near my house, ever. We are not prepared at all compared to other countries or states that have snow on a yearly basis. We don't have snow plows, snow shovels, snow blowers, or the stuff you put into streets to prevent cars from sliding. Could you imagine how it would be? A state not prepared for snow weather. People thinking they'll be able to drive and then sliding around the streets? A few inches of snow might not be a big deal where you live, but for us it is.
User avatar #23 to #17 - charagrin (01/17/2014) [-]
Yes, that was the point. Doesn't make it anyless true. Not poking fun at Cali itself, of course it would not prepare for something it is not likely to ever need, besides the one time it did need it of course.
#52 to #23 - KingTroll (01/17/2014) [-]
I wasn't taking offense to it if that's what you thought, but the way I read your original post was that we over reacted and declared a State of Emergency for a small matter. I was just thinking that just because it's not an emergency for you, doesn't mean it wouldn't be for someone else. Glad we're on the same page though lol
#19 to #17 - KingTroll (01/16/2014) [-]
Also, in areas where it snows, most people get 4 wheel drive cars. We don't need them. It's usually either front wheel or rear wheel drive. So not only we don't have that salt for the streets, or tire chains, most of us don't even have 4x4.
#27 to #19 - agena (01/17/2014) [-]
I drive a little front wheel drive car and it does just fine in the snow. It's not about the vehicle, it's about the skill of the driver. Having common sense to drive slower, slow up sooner, and to not lock your brakes upon stopping is all you need. Also, isn't Cali infamous for their Hummers or is that just a stereotype?
#49 to #27 - KingTroll (01/17/2014) [-]
Really? I always thought having 4x4 made a big traction difference, but I've never driven in the snow. But people in Los Angeles (my city in California) drive like ******* assholes. Speeding and cutting each other off, and rain doesn't prevent them at all, and I'm sure snow won't either. Being patient is not an option for us. I admit I drive like an asshole too, but even in the rain, and not having swapped out the old tires yet, My car could brake on a dime. But a lot of the other cars can't, but they stil decide to drive like a douche and crash into **** when it rains, and probably when it snows too.

I love hummers, and so do many other California people, but due to their gas mileage, not too many people drive them anymore. Plus since they don't make them anymore, I see them less and less as time goes. But I wouldn't say were infamous for Hummers, I definitley wouldn't consider it a stereotype. I guess the closest thing we have to a hummer now is a G550 lol
#57 to #49 - agena (01/17/2014) [-]
Four wheel drive will always have better traction and most 4x4s sit up higher than cars which makes it easier to het through the snow without getting stuck. If we're talking about mostly icey conditions, a front wheel drive car that is low to the ground is the way to go.

And if someone drives like a douche when weather conditions are less than desirable then that's their problem. The majority of accidents are caused by douches in big 4x4 trucks that think they're invincible in the snow. There have been plenty of times when I've seen trucks or jeeps in the ditch and I just laugh as I drive safely past them in my dinky car.
User avatar #24 to #19 - charagrin (01/17/2014) [-]
That was the point of my post, Cali is not prepared for what other states consider "ok" weather, let alone a full on storm. Likewise, Maine is not prepared for 8 months of 90 degree heat.
User avatar #47 to #4 - Twithyiguess (01/17/2014) [-]
Northern California is much different than south, it snows up here quite regularly near the winter, we have tall mountains. A few years ago it snowed pretty hard, a lot of the large trees fell down and smashed quite a few houses. It was ******* creepy, the trees weren't used to taking that amount of snow so they'd all started to snap. It was nearly two feet where I'm at, which for California is a lot, especially if they trees aren't used to supporting that weight. It's not that they'd freaked out over a little snow, it was that they were freaking out over the limbs that weren't able to support the weight breaking, and falling and killing somebody.
