Attempting to cater to every last bit of ridiculous, long-winded, outdated canon has ruined many great stories.
Especially when major pieces of that canon were established decades ago by movies that were focused on being successful films more than setting up sustainable long-term lore, and much of the rest of that lore was written after the fact to explain the movies instead of being considered during production.
Star Wars' canon has been a mess since long before Disney got their hands on it. And that's not a surprise, when you're trying to tie together DECADES of movies and other media into a cohesive story. I'm not saying that Disney succeeded in making a great movie, but ' **** it, let's just focus on making the movie' was an appropriate response to the sprawling, tangled wreck of lore surrounding the series.

I liked the setup to his character, but for him to work as a bad guy from me, I need him to transition from "tantrum throwing 30 year old" into "death stare, make your head explode with the force because you failed to follow my orders 31 year old".
I mean, Vader stops blaster shots with his hand, Kylo keeps blaster shots suspended mid-air without even pretending to focus on it. He's clearly going to surpass his idol and I can't wait for that.

Personally, I want to see Anakin show up as a force ghost to Kylo and tell him the light side is where it is at. Maybe tell him off for being the most emo sith ever.
