You guys are all euphoric.

Lemme bring down the details;

>Talented guy takes his time to make comics and wants to make a living whole
doing something he likes rather than settling for a ****** job at starbucks. The more visitors to his site, the more ad revenue to help keep him alive.

>Kids post his comics to another site, which gets more viewers already as it is because it's user-submitted content. Fewer people visit the original artist's page, and therefore gets less ad revenue.

>Content is copyrighted. Asks Admin to take it down.
>"Nopefag" - Admin
>Legal action ensues. Admin uses the ad money made from OP's comic to pay for
his own lawyers. OP can't afford better lawyers because the ad revenue went to admin instead of OP.

Funnyjunk was here before 4chan, so all of the scum of the four-leaf site came from here.

Have my shaver, you guys need it for your necks...Women like either fully bearded, or cleanly shaved men. Don't stay in between.

My understanding was the oatmeal guy gave admin some links to some of the content, admin took down those posts, then oatmeal found more and got pissed because he thought admin would take down all the content when admin was just taking down the ones that oatmeal specifically said. Basically the same thing as the viacom-youtube dispute, but just between two people

I'm just going to join in this convo and say that I've gone to other sites and read other comics from FJ.

Some include.
Doctor Cat
Whomp
LFG comic
Oglaf
Happle Tea
SATW
Brawl in the Family
Csectioncomics

... point is I've found comics much quicker and with significantly less effort just by scrolling the front page of FJ than by anything else.

Yes I could look for cool content myself, but I'm a lazy piece of **** so me and the rest of the community with the exception of super fans of webcomics AREN'T going to do that. also

>implying there isn't like 100's of annoying sauce requests that get answered on the comments section anyways.

>implying anyone trying to thumbwhore by sharing one stolen content at a time won't eventually be chastised by the community who will put up the link where the rest of the content is at.

I'm not going to say Oatmeal and other webcomics owe admin, because that's just stupid too, but the relationship is far from parasitic.
And seriously **** anyone who takes out watermarks..... there's no reason to do so unless you're a lying sack of **** who takes credit for things he didn't do.

The biggest problem wasn't so much the reposting but the autists who would either refuse to post the source of the content they were reposting, but also actively remove the watermarks of comics not just pertaining to TheOatmeal's. As if they could successfully convince people that they were the original makers of the comic, and would even actively delete comments that would post links to the contrary. And we had gone so far into the "WE <3 REPOSTS" shtick that people even started defending the watermark removal.

Posting content to a single media hub isn't such a bad idea as it can advertise many talented artists who can't really afford standard advertising, but when you have retards think they can forge their own spotlight by claiming credit is when you start having problems. TheOatMeal can't exactly say that he hasn't earned a significant number of fans from FJ as a result of the reposting back when credit was given, and probably has even sold a number of books as a result (I know I've bought one of them). We just need to maintain a line of providing sourcing for the content reposted, or we'll eventually reach a point we can't repost comics at all.

Alright, so you have an idea of his profits that's a start.
But you said "Oatmeal profit > Funnyjunk profit".

There are statistics involving longterm and short term financial gains and losses,
and advertising alone can actually account for an incredible sum. Google runs on our ads, and look at what they can do with it. Incredible things.

So while your opinion is well researched, I would still like to see some numbers.

I think The Oatmeal was out of his league, thinking his picture that he distributed on a public website wouldn't be reposted, and for thinking he has any right to ask for it to get down, and then insult a website afterwards because they didn't.

Honestly it's like when celebrities ask to get their photos taken off the internet.

Still, when it's user-created content, it works a bit like piracy.

While the comics themselves are free on the net, visiting the page can turn a necessary profit.

I'd never even heard of this guy until I saw him on here. Up until this happened, he got a ******** of traffic from me, and my showing my friends his content.

He directly owes me ~300 fans. (roughly the people I introduced to his site, and the people they introduced to it). I never would have found his site without FJ. So he owes FJ for at least 300 fans who many still go on his website. And I'm sure there are plenty more people on FJ who only found him because of FJ, and their friends who only found them in relation to FJ.

Really, I mean it sucks that some people take his watermarks off, that's just being a ****** person. But it IS inevitable and his content is posted with or without watermarks EVERYWHERE on the internet. He should just take the free advertisement.

The issue I have is not with what happened, but the oatmeal's attitude. He managed to come off as such an entitled, self-righteous cunt despite being completely in the right. The guy needs a major lesson in humility.

Is this guy still whining about that?
Jesus, he's whining about free advertising.

I see a Gone With the Blastwave comic on the front page AND I GO TO THE SOURCE WEBSITE.
SAME WITH CYANIDE AND HAPPINESS, WHO ALSO PULLED THIS JUVENILLE "STOP GIVING ME FREE ADVERTISING" ********

There are no words to describe how much of a spoiled little bitch this guy is.

While I do agree he probably should stop, you have to remember how big of a deal it was for him. He was starting off in the industry and funnyjunk came swooping in and started throwing lawsuits left and right. I don't know if you know what it is like, but imagine how scary it would be being confronted with a lawsuit that could end you if you lost.

Not to mention, he receives a lot of harassment constantly from butt-hurt FJers to this day, thus it makes the wound rather hard to heal over.

Also no matter how much of a child you think he is, he has helped raise quite a lot of money to help the wildlife and helped build a Nikola Tesla Museum. I respect men like this, no matter how childish he is, he has done good for this world.

Funnyjunk didn't just "swoop in." Neither did it start throwing lawsuits "left and right."

That is your opinion on the matter, but I was trying to give an alternative viewpoint. One where this guy was simply trying to stop people from plagiarizing his work. Imagine what it must have felt like sending that message "Hey could you take down the work I have written from your website and here are the links to them?" Then getting a lawsuit against you? Then making a comic about that and receiving another lawsuit for defamation.

Try for ten seconds to imagine what that would feel like.

Okay there are some issues though, biggest being that some comics were actually removing his watermarks and giving NO CREDIT to his site, which is a slap to the face for anyone actually making comics. That and they aren't "giving free advertising" they're putting all of his stuff on FJ and nobody here is bothering to go to his site, losing ad revenue.

Are you trolling? It's common practice on this website to remove the source links on webcomics.

But then again, sites that is filled with random content, FJ, 9gag, Memebase, Reddit ,etc is what made OC comic site becomes popular.

Also, FJ don't use a goddamn watermark, which is better than those sites who uses watermark and making people thinks that the contents are come from 'that' place.
