I don't know what to title this.

I'm building a computer and am planning on recording some gameplay, anybody know of any good video recording and editing software I could use? Preferably free or at least cheap? Thanks.

That sounds terrible, I mean if I was desperate maybe I would get a high quality dashcam, but nah.

OBS. It's free, open source, and really good.

It looks nice, however I know essentially nothing about open source, what does that help with?

Since the source code to the program is posted on the internet, it's a lot more secure, and if it's hosted on a service like github, it'll have less bugs.

I use Adobe Premiere Elements for editing, for the most part it gets the job done, pretty straightforward, but it lacks a lot in terms of special effects, I've been looking into Sony Movie Studio 13, its cheaper than Elements and looks a lot more powerful though.

They both look good, I'll try them out.

dxtory fulfills all my needs. very customizable, free. do note the video files uncompressed take a large chunk of hard drive space

I'll make sure to check it out. My friend has told me how he's filled up a 2Tb hard drive with raw video captures and it didn't take him very long.

HyperCam
Fraps Personal favorite
I think Overwolf supports screen recordings as well.
And XSplit also helps for streaming.

Those all look interesting, I'll give them each a try when I get everything built, thank you. I've used the Fraps demo in the past on my laptop, but having that 20 second limit is a bitch, it also took me forever to figure out how to get it working.

Look for a cracked torrent or something like that. It's usually not hard to find.

I'm tempted, but I have never been able to understand how to do cracked CD keys so I generally avoid torrents.

Most come with a README text file that tells you how to install it or has installation instructions in the torrent description of whichever webpage you find it on.

A good page is Kickass Torrents kat.cr/ . Almost guaranteed to get any form of instructions on how to install it there.

Good luck on whatever you're going to make.

I use Fraps, but the one thing I dislike about it is the file sizes, I've had 20GB video recordings whenever I go past 30 mins

Long time, non-famous or active youtube here - VSDC is a good editor, comes with crap ware though, so make sure to uncheck the crap ware. Recording, i use bandicam - great tool, lots of options, 40$ though.

My friend uses that, he's told me it's good but I think he also said he's had some issues in the past, can't remember what though.
