I don't get how if cold things contract, why do soda cans explode in the freezer, and why does ice always come out bigger than the water you put in?

Anonymous was almost right. The crystalline structure of ice causes it to be larger than the water put in. Normally, when a substance forms crystals, it's smaller, compressed; like diamonds. But the way water molecules act when turning into ice, it expands slightly. And the reason soda cans explode is because when they get cold, the metal of the can contracts and the water expands.
