1. the solar panels get damaged by sand (sand storms and **** ) and maintainance is actually quite difficult.
2. you have to move the the electricity/energy to wherever you want it and does giant cables aren´t cheap
3. there is actually a parabol solarstation somewhere in the sahara.

Who will maintain these? The ******* Sahara Solar Panel Nomads?

your a moron OP, go learn something
sand dunes constantly move.. the solar panels would be buried in a month
sucks that the planet is covered in dense people like you

"Solar panels use sun"
"The desert is sunny"
"Omg why don't we put them there lol I'm smarter than all engineers"

Because it is extremely inefficient to have power travel from Sahara to England.

actually the majority of green energy is specialized in from country to country.
e.g Denmark specializes in Windmills because we have oceans and general low ground with windy areas.

1) Sandstorms and dunes moving would bury all the solar panels in less than a month.
2) Sahara is huge. Transporting all the power across the huge ass desert would be highly ineffective.

Humans are not the smartest species indeed, and you're the perfect example of it.

Let's not forget about the fact that the power needs to be transmitted somewhere from the solar panels....

You and whoever made that image are stupid and ignorant. I don't think I need to explain why since other comments have already done a decent job of that, but you still need more people telling you how much of an idiot you are.

You are an idiot.

Wire losses are huge, the further away the power plant is the more power is lost, and there are only two ways to reduce that loss: bigger wires (lots of metal that takes a lot of energy to process), or more voltage, which requires higher power poles and more insulation to prevent leakage. Solar panels aren't the most efficient (or practical) way to convert light into energy on a large scale anyways. Steam turbines and sterling engines are better. Plus as previously mentioned sand is known to damage solar collectors, or at least scratch them up and make them less effective.
#62 - awesomechardey (05/05/2014) [-]
Well, common solar panels don't work too well with to big ammounts of solar ray and heat. Long story short: they work better in europe, than in Africa.

true, seems some people dont know there's a limit to transportation of electricity

Well, transmission and the environmental challenges for stuff like that, are just those, challenges to be overcome. Greatest obstacle, I'd imagine, is political stability in the region. One doesn't want his multi-billion dollar facility to be at the mercy of the dictator of a week/local warlord, who are like to blow the thing up rather than to leave for whomever it is who's replacing them. Not to mention the corruption. Billion for the tech, two for bribes, overcharging and other crap. Basically, more of a military problem than and engineering. More efficient to just build them in the north, even if the output won't be that great. Why the americans aren't doing this in their deserts, that I don't know. Oil companies, wrong states for pork?
User avatar #1 - flemsdfer ONLINE (05/04/2014) [-]
I'm saying that humans are stupid because people don't know that there's no foundation to build something like that in the Sahara and the blowing dunes would cover what you did build up in a week, but they decide to talk **** about it like they're goddamn engineers who could fix the planet.
