Actually, the best way is to look at their "neck"
If they are venomous, they have a venom gland, making it puffy around their neck area
If they don't, their neck will be pretty smooth i made neck in quotations because snakes are just tails with a eyes and a mouth

im pretty sure if i have enough time to check the scales underneath a snakes bung hole, it would have bitten me anyway

As an Australian and knowing 7 of the most venomous snakes in the world like the back of my hand i can confirm this is ******** .

Some venomous snakes have dual scales after their arse and some non venomous snakes have single.

A better way to judge if a snake is poisonous or not is body thickness/head shape.
Poisonous snakes always have smaller heads, sleeker bodies and look somewhat evil in comparison

**bellbottomshark rolled a random image posted in comment #21 at One Piece ** Best way to tell if it is poisonous is to offer it your arm.
User avatar #15 - UlquiGrimmHime (11/01/2013) [-]
Good to know if I'm ever staring at a snake's ass
User avatar #4 - davidispissed (10/31/2013) [+] (3 replies)
also, if the back of its head is swollen so it looks triangular, that means it has developed venom glands.
User avatar #5 to #4 - lamarsmithgot (10/31/2013) [-]
That rule really only applies for vipers and pit vipers. Elapids are violently venomous and have heads just like garter snakes
User avatar #27 - canthegreat ONLINE (11/01/2013) [-]
how about we all play it safe and stay away from snakes instead of looking at it's ass to figure out whether it's safe.
