tbh I want to know why he didn't use the Force Speed there anyway.

Vid related, some slo mo of them using Force Speed at the start of the movie STAR WARS episode I Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan using force speed to escape
User avatar #83 to #27 - confusedasian (10/17/2015) [-]
I think it's because force speed is hard to stop. You're going at high speeds and putting a brake on it, isn't really the best way. You'd get smacked in the laser grid. Also those things activated on and off in a small time frame while also being small "rooms" to begin with.

tldr; safety reasons I'm assuming.

because it's all gonna be weird if I look at it as if it was earth.

NOT FAST ENUFF
User avatar #7 - motherfuckingkenji (10/16/2015) [-]
Are people actually stupid enough to think that it's bad choreography if their blades weren't always aiming to kill?
That's kinda how sword-fighting works, especially with how fast-paced lightsaber-fighting is.

Jedi feints and **** .
Trust in the Force.
The Force says to swing above their head, make them go "oh **** " and duck, allowing the Jedi to either reverse the swing or spin all the way.

I am a fencer. You know what a feint is about? You feint an attack one way to force the parry early, then dip your blade around theirs to get the kill.

You never waste your energy with bad extensions unless youre testing your opponent's parrying.
#44 to #30 - anon (10/16/2015) [-]
"i'm a fencer"
So not a Jedi? STFU.
User avatar #50 to #44 - Sethorein ONLINE (10/16/2015) [-]
Certain concepts of combat are universal. Feints are not what he is claiming they are. Period. You don't need to be a Jedi to understand what a feint is.

User avatar #62 to #50 - bandgeekster (10/16/2015) [-]
I always thought that since they're supposed to be in tune with the Force, and weaving it into their movements, that the swings that don't seem to be aimed to connect were just blows that were deflected by the opponents Force flow. I imagine they have basically flows and currents of Force surrounding them and following their movements and its harder to go against these currents with a direct strike than it is to just wear the stamina of the opponent down until your Force current can override theirs and a blow connects.
User avatar #74 to #62 - Sethorein ONLINE (10/17/2015) [-]
That could be the case... But uhhh... that doesn't really have anything to do with feints.

User avatar #20 to #17 - motherfuckingkenji (10/16/2015) [-]
That is how it works in a lightsaber duel.
Jedi rarely aim for the kill in a duel, preferring to cut off hands and **** so they can take their opponent into custody.

Try to keep your autism to yourself, m8.

No, no it does not.
#41 to #7 - anon (10/16/2015) [-]
>That's kinda how sword-fighting works

what purpose does clanging swords together serve?

the whole point is that you will literally go for any opening you see, the only time swords clash is to stop them from getting hit.

the reasons movies do this is because it looks good and lasts more than 10 seconds. if you were to spin round during a fight for some spin move, you'd be stabbed or sliced in the back before you can finish your smug retort.
#8 to #7 - limberlarry (10/16/2015) [-]
That is not in any way at all how sword fighting works. It is however how movie sword fighting works because
a) Real life sword fighting looks kinda retarded and
b) Actors are actual people and hitting them, even with blunt swords/sticks, is dangerous

#80 to #8 - cannibalvegan (10/17/2015) [-]
That depends on what type of sword fighting, viking sword fighting looks ******* retarded as you can see in this clip. A sword fight between two skilled swordsmen doesn't look as cool in real life as in movies, but it's still pretty cool and if they are skilled the fight won't be over in 2 seconds unless one gets lucky.
User avatar #19 to #8 - motherfuckingkenji (10/16/2015) [-]
No, it's how Star Wars sword fighting works.
A Jedi's first target is somewhere non-lethal. Cutting the hands off allows the Jedi to take their opponent into custody. Granted this isn't ALWAYS the idea, but in this situation it makes sense.
I get that the safety of the actual people is extremely important, but with all the crazy ******* movie-making techniques we have nowadays, I don't think it should be much of an issue. Use some of that CG the prequels use a ******* of or something.
#46 to #19 - huntergriff ONLINE (10/16/2015) [-]
They still have to use this **** FOR the CGI. Meaning, they still have to actually fight with swords. It's not just a hilt and they're all just swishing at nothing. That's how it's always been.

Funny thing for that, at least from what i read. They wer all so into the acting, and playing jedi, that when they were given teh fake pretend lighteners, they kept bending them because they were full on hitting each other at full force and blackign which caused the metal tubes to bend. "i'm a jedi!" *dink* dammit, stop breaking our toys!" "Sorry Darth Maul" "Its ok Qui'gon"

Not going to lie, I ******* loved the saber fights in Star Wars, not because it looked fancy but because they learned different fighting styles and had to differentiate between multiple fighting styles when filming the fight scenes...

I'd love to meet Ewan McGregor.

I just assumed that Jedi fights were always defensive until you wait for a fatal opening to beat the opponent in one strike.

Plus all the dodging and jumping needs to look cool, how bland would a medieval sword fight with lightsabers be.

There is a fair amount of bs moves in that duel, but many of the mistakes displayed are not mistakes at all, just legitimate attempts to parry, or more specifically, to brush opponents weapon aside, to gain an opportunity to strike.
