**bellbottomshark rolled image** I think the real reason was that he wished his dad was there for him more. That he was reliable and part of his life.
Something one of the kids said something earlier in that episode was, "dad's great and all but I've only met him twice."
I think Jake got screwed over on being a proper father by the whole rapidly ageing kids thing. The one who seems to get on best with him is the one who made the most effort to be in his life. Whichever one was the criminal mastermind and hung out with them when they built that time machine.
