I usually laugh and remind them of how old I am.That usually quiets them down or they grumble about how the pressures of today differ from now.
So for those that don't know me I've served in the military for 12 years and I have been deployed 4 times, before joining the service I lived out of my car because at 18 as I thought I knew everything and dropped out of college. In the short time span of my life I have: Been on drugs, lost hundreds of friends, fell in love, loved deeply as a man can, had my heart broken countless times, been married, lost a child, went back to school and graduated, buried my parents, experienced the horrors of war, been hated, been loved, sky dived, scuba dived, slept with your mom ( possibly), been in bar fights, been arrested, been divorced, seen many foreign countries and experienced their cultures, drank the water in Mexico (resort towns are fine, ghetto water bad.), been with a woman of every ethnicity, and even learned to bake.
Things I haven't done: got a tattoo, joined a major religion, and ran for public office.
I'm sorry to say, but your brief moments of adulthood hardships are just a foot note, a piece of history, for me. It gets worse,it gets, better, but at the end you're kind of at the back of the line in life long experiences while I'm up here in the front.
I'm not trying to brag or say to you your experiences are important, but trust when older people say they've been there or they know what they're talking about because sometime they have.
