Well, the new canon is based off it. Disney removed some core concepts, like their names, Han and Leia losing one son to war, and their dark side-influenced son actually dying in the battle with his sister, but the rest of it is pretty much intact.

The scrapping was done so that the new films were not restrained by the outcomes of old stories. That being said, they're drawing a lot of reference from the EU, hence the 'legends' title. Some of it may be true... some of it may not. Can we not just enjoy it as that?
