Alright, this is gonna be a pretty big rant. As a disclaimer I had a really supportive mom, so this rant doesn't represent me, but rather the friends I've known who have had bad experiences with disapproving parents.

When I see **** like this it only reaffirms my belief that there are really all types of parents. When you're a kid there's no 100% correct way to please them in this society.

I mean everybody remember that 4chan post where the guy said he took his dad's car out and slept in it in the park so that his dad would feel proud of him for having friends and being social? That was a heart-breaker but then you see this post right here where because her son is being social and wants to throw a party she feels compelled to tell him he's a disappointment. **** hurts man.

I've had friends who have had parents not care about them at all, but instead care about their grades in school. This one guy I knew had his mom barely talk to him for days, but if his grades dropped a few points he'd not hear the end of it until he promised to fix them. I feel his mom was trying to care... but didn't know how.

Another guy's dad I knew didn't care about anything as long as he wasn't on the computer. He really liked being on the computer and considered it an escape. His dad wouldn't let him on for more than a few hours at a time though and if he got off he'd just sit in his room doing nothing. It's not like the dad thought it'd rot his brain or anything though, he wasn't overprotective of his schooling or grades or anything to do with education, just his computer... felt weird.

The gist of it is that I see all these types of parents and I really can't help but feel some people get a raw deal. You might be an over-achieved born into a family where athletics are praised. Or perhaps you're an introvert born into a family where everybody is expected to be a social butterfly. There's so many parents that I feel just look for the wrong things in their children. I think their heart is usually in the right place, but I can't help but feel if parents would just support their children's endeavors Within reason we'd have a much happier and well-adjusted society.

Of course saying all that I do believe it only applies to a minority of parents, but damn the people who I've seen affected by it... it really just feels bad man.

TL;DR - This post hit me hard, I've seen too many great people ruined by bad parenting.

As a parent myself I will peacefully disagree with you. One of the key elements of parenting is instilling your child with a moral code. If one of my children were to throw a party I am well aware that alcohol and illegal substances would be present; unless my son throws lame parties. I agree that that you should support your childs endeavors however you should also be disappointed to desensitize them to the feeling of failure that life will inevitably hit them with at some point. Otherwise at the first sign of failing they will either breakdown or go to tumblr for support like so many spineless whiny sensitive people do *Shivers* I don't want that for my kids.

You should really learn to listen to what someone is saying rather than arguing against what you expect them to say. THAT is an important part of parenting.

My main point if you didn't get it by reading the entire rant was that some parents try to project themselves onto their children.

Let's forget about the partying for one second.

An intellectual being pushed down by an athletic father

Vice-versa. Parents instilling moral codes is good, but only if they're objectively moral and not biased.
