I think we're talking about two different things, here. I'm pointing out the idiocy of people who think the store rips people off. You do realize that they have a storefront that operates as a normal (if super popular and touristy) pawn shop, right? That exists entirely independent of whether or not the show is scripted.

It's not gullibility if it's true. Sure, you're Civil War memorabilia might be in decent condition and worth $5000, but if nobody buys it, the store eats the $2500 or whatever price and never sees a return. That's common sense. Rick didn't have to say any of that for me to not be a retard and know that it's true.

And, if they've made "millions" on a pawn shop it's because they've been at it for decades, use the small amount of money they make on smaller items of historical value and invest it in bigger items they can sell like custom cars and such. Also, the WILDLY SUCCESSFUL TV SERIES MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT.

There already pay stupendously low amounts of money for items they think they'll have a hard time selling. We're talking about rare items, treasures for collectors or museums that they pay for 10-15% of what the items are worth.

And it's "Wildly successful" due to the fact that if you browse the channels and end up on history there's a 50% that it's pawn stars running. Not because of the quality or because people watch it on purpose.

Yeah, again, somebody has to buy those treasures for them to be worth anything. As a business owner, they seek to minimize risk and maximize profits. That's not even basic economics, that's basic trade. If we didn't have representative currency, he'd be trying to get somebody's old rifle for one beaver pelt instead of two. There's nothing at all shady about that. It's not like he forces anybody to sell anything to him. "Let me talk to my buddy who is an expert on X" is not some kind of autohypnosis phrase that makes people make poor decisions. Stop acting as if the customer has no agency and that the buyer is some kind of supervillain.

As for the TV show, your right, success doesn't mean it's a good show. But, before they had endless marathons of it, it had to get ratings to begin with. People line up for hours in the tourist trap storefront. It's popular. On television, that means it generates money. Regardless of whether you like it, it is a popular show that makes the people involved in it fabulously wealthy.
