I tried reading the book, but some of the sentences gave me headaches. Here's a quote from page 17; the sentence starts on line 5, and ends on line 6, book: The Hunger Games. "Most refuse dealing with the racketeers but carefully, carefully." This is where I stopped reading as my headache had reached its pinnacle at this point. Could someone try to explain to me what the hell Katniss means?

Basically it's saying that most people only deal with racketeers when they are taking extreme caution.

She says that, "Most refuse dealing with the racketeers...", why would she then tell how people who actually do deal with the racketeers deal in the same sentence?

Basically just to add more detail. It's like saying I'm going to the mall. How am I going, by plane, by car, by bus, by swimming across the Pacific. It just shows how people do something.

She was talking about people who DIDN'T deal with racketeers, why bother with telling us who people DO deal with them?
At least if you told me how you got to the mall, it'd be related to how you got to the mall.

It was adding a condition. Most people do not deal with racketeers EXCEPT those who do it carefully.

It doesn't make any since to structure a sentence that way. Could you give me another example?

I've never seen it, and it made my bad headache even worse. To avoid any chance of me running into another terribly structured sentence, it looks like I'm gonna have to pass on this series. I usually try to power through bad/terribly written books, I read the Twilight Saga for Christ's sake, but even that didn't give me a headache.

It's not my fault that she wrote it in a way that I wasn't taught to, it's not my fault that I have chronic migraines, and it's also not my fault that she doesn't know how to write in a way that makes ******* sense.

I only ever get migraines when a book is written terribly, if it's to damn loud, or if I'm sick. Seeing as it was dead quiet, and I wasn't sick at the time, I'm pretty sure that it was terribly written.

I've only ever seen the word 'but' used like this, "I don't like potatoes, but I do like tomatoes." I've never seen it used to take the place of five words. It should've been written like, "Most refuse dealing with the racketeers, but those that do, do so carefully.
