as an american, i hadn't ever seen that word until i was ten or eleven reading harry potter. nobody has to use it but seeing as you see it more you are more likely to need to use it.

"queue" was borrowed from French by the English language

It's also a pain in the ass to write when we speak French btw. We also have that turd-bucket of a word, "cueillir" (means "to pick [a plant]") - everyone hates it.
