You think this is being "rekt" how? It only shows how mysoginistic and male dominated this world still is. It's ******* embarrassing. Besides the fact that the douche telling the story is calling this poor girl fat, he also embarrassed her in front of everyone.

here i'll explain it to your low iq for comprehension value.
all last names in history were mens last names, this system was made to help prevent families from interbreeding and to denote clans and groups apart.
the only time this will not apply is with gay/lesbian marriages however it won't matter as they don't reproduce anyways.
but that does leave a question, who in those marriages chooses who gets the last name and how?

It's a custom that does originate from when a woman was more or less seen as property, and even if you look past that, it's still weird that it's a custom that it's the guy's surname that gets passed on. It's one of the few times, where I think the modern feminists actually have a point, but then again, it's only a custom, so it would only be an issue for really conservative families that have a lot of more important issues

User avatar #98 to #15 - rapsuskiller (07/20/2015) [-]
That's only an States' thing, right? In Spain the woman keeps her family name (and I think it's better that way, it's not like symbolic unity through a name is going to make a better marriage) but if they have kids they have the husband's name first and the wife's second
#99 to #98 - funpunk (07/20/2015) [-]
That makes sense. In my opinion, the woman taking the name simplifies things. Like "there's Mr. & Mrs. Smith and their son John Smith" is easier to remember than "there's Mr. Smith and Mrs. Davis, and their son John Smith Davis".
User avatar #102 to #99 - rapsuskiller (07/20/2015) [-]
It's not really that much of an effort, since for most people we only care to remember their first surname. For a family, there's a tendency to adress it with the husband's surname. For example, we would say "They are the Smiths" instead of "They are the family of Mr. Smith and Mrs. Davis".
#103 to #98 - anon (07/20/2015) [-]
Can confirm; some of my housemate's family is from El Salvador and her surname is Beesley Cecena. Taking the husband's name is quite a common thing in a lot of countries I think? I know it is in the UK, Ireland, France etc.
User avatar #105 to #15 - xtremehivoltage (07/20/2015) [-]
Because a woman like that want all the benefits none of the commitment
#17 to #15 - anon (07/19/2015) [-]
It used to indicate that woman belonged to that man back when women were property.
Love had nothing to do with it.
User avatar #22 to #17 - funpunk (07/19/2015) [-]
I meant in more recent times it could be looked at that way.
User avatar #56 to #22 - wraithguard (07/20/2015) [-]
You could look at a lot of things that way if you wanted. Why is the taking of a last name any more special? How many symbols of love does a person need?

Actually my brother took his wife's surname, he had a different father and I guess he just wanted to clear all in his life that reminded him of his failures and problems, I think he thought that his old surname carried along some bad luck.
#63 to #15 - fangfox (07/20/2015) [-]
I find it weird that only one surname is passed on. I'm hispanic Puerto Rican , and like many other Latinos/as, I have two surnames. However, because I moved to the US, some of my documents have either my paternal surname or my maternal surname. Can't I simply continue using both my surnames?
#68 to #63 - anon (07/20/2015) [-]
What about when you have kids then?
Would they have 3 surnames?
Their kids? 4?
If we did this instead of only passing on one surname, 5 generations from now we would have children with 5-8 surnames. Which is a problem, just in case anyone thought it wasn't.
User avatar #70 to #68 - fangfox (07/20/2015) [-]
It will still be two surnames for them and their children. They way it works is the father's first surname becomes the child's first surname, and the mother's first surname becomes the child's second surname. As long as I've been alive, that has been the custom for surnames in Puerto Rico.

I should clarify that when couples get married in these countries (or at least where I'm from), the woman doesn't have to take on the man's last name, they both keep their surnames.
User avatar #83 to #70 - snipys (07/20/2015) [-]
so can we kick our feminists over to your country where they can be happy?
User avatar #159 to #83 - fangfox (07/21/2015) [-]
If you're from the US, it's still the same thing. Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States. And then if they end up in Puerto Rico, they'll just find something to bitch about, like they always do.
#166 to #70 - anon (08/14/2015) [-]
**anonymous used "*roll picture*"**
**anonymous rolled image**So it just takes an extra generation to throw out the maternal surname.
User avatar #133 to #70 - palmsspaghetti (07/20/2015) [-]
I should also add that none of my friends from Puerto Rico had two surnames. But I'm from New York so it could be that when they immigrated to the states they died one to simplify it. not my family but my friends' families
User avatar #130 to #70 - palmsspaghetti (07/20/2015) [-]
My grandmother is from Puerto Rico and my grandfather is from the Dominican Republic. She kept his name and dropped hers as well as her mother before her. So did all of her sisters when they got married and all the rest of my family Puerto Rican, Dominican or otherwise have done the same. The only one who kept their name was their only brother.
User avatar #158 to #130 - fangfox (07/21/2015) [-]
That's is very interesting. Having been raised in Puerto Rico, and being in the States for less than two years, that was my norm.

May I ask if your grandparents got married in the States or in the Island? I feel that is a really important question in this matter, because in the States it's already a custom to replace the woman's last name with her husbands (unless decided otherwise). On the other hand, you aren't obligated to change your surnames in Puerto Rico, and if you do so, it's your decision as well.
User avatar #76 to #15 - greyhoundfd (07/20/2015) [-]
Like the other people said, it really wasn't about love. It's a tradition left over from when society actually was misogynistic. Personally, I think that couples should decide for themselves whether or not to combine last names.
#97 to #76 - funpunk (07/20/2015) [-]
I guess that makes sense. I've heard of husbands changing their name for their wives before they get married, so that could simplify things.
User avatar #144 to #97 - pinecest (07/20/2015) [-]
I knew this one guy who changed to his wife's surname because his was really silly and he didn't want his kids to be made fun of for it.

Malala Yousafzai will give you hope for feminists. The real ones aren't bitching on the internet or on pseudo-journalist blogs. They're standing up for women's rights where they don't have any. Malala was shot in the face by the Taliban for attending school and she took it like a damn hero by surviving the **** out of it, going back to school and onto public speaking like "y'all can't ******* stop me, we gonna learn all the things".
Whenever I see spastic children make a mockery of civil rights movements, I just think of people like her and remember that leaders and heroes do exist, they're just not bitching about "trivial ******** " Ayaan Hirsi Ali (former Muslim feminist who helps out in developing countries) apparently used trivial BS to refer to American Feminists' obsession with Matt Taylor's shirt, but I have yet to found a reliable source for it .
