God committed genocide of the entire populace of Earth at least 3 times and kept convincing people to kill their kids for him. Satan doesn't sound so bad in comparison I suppose.

From what I know there's two versions of it: one is more about focusing on your self than the group. The reason it's taught as Satanism is that it's the exact opposite Christianity since Christianity is all about the group over yourself.
But, there is theistic Satanism that actively worships Satan as a god of sorts. I don't know a ton about it but the few people I've met who said they were theistic Satanists seemed to be the kind who are just trying to go against the group for the sake of doing so.
