and they ruined what probably took 100 years to develop
#52 to #49 - hassoutobi (01/10/2016) [-]
Uhh really, 100 years? aren't you exagerating a little bit?

Also, there are literally thousands of ant colonies out there. I think ''ruining'' a few for the purpose of science and study isn't really that bad.
User avatar #82 to #52 - broswagonist (01/10/2016) [-]
As far as I know, in some species of ants the colony can last for an indefinite amount of time if its lucky. Kinda like that jellyfish or lobsters, if it avoids being wiped out the same line of ants can inhabit a colony forever.
#101 to #82 - hassoutobi (01/11/2016) [-]
''100 years do develop''

not 100 years of existence.
User avatar #102 to #101 - broswagonist (01/11/2016) [-]
Also as far as I know there is no way to do more than estimate the age of an ant hill due to all the factors involved, but I do know that very large anthills have been (probably loosely) estimated to have been up to 150 years old assuming development continued over that time.
#112 to #102 - hassoutobi (01/11/2016) [-]
but that one is not that large. If you compare it to other types of anthills found in Africa then it's pretty small.

Anyways you're missing the point. The point is that ''ruining'' one of these colonies for the sake of better understanding how ants live and create their colonies is not a bad thing, expecially when there are thousands of colonies like this one out there, and billions of ants.
User avatar #113 to #112 - broswagonist (18 hours ago) [-]
This has nothing to do with Africa, the anthills I was thinking of weren't even located there but in the UK instead.

Uh, at what point did I ever argue against this point? I'm just saying it's possible for this anthill to be 100 years in development.
#115 to #113 - hassoutobi (18 hours ago) [-]
But they're still anthills. Just from different locations and made by different species.

I never said it wasn't possible, just that I doubt this particular anthill displayed in this post had over 100 years of development.

Can you stop replying? This is pointless.
User avatar #116 to #115 - broswagonist (18 hours ago) [-]
"Just from different locations and made by different species" actually means quite a lot of factors are different, and it's very likely the speed at which two different species of ants build anthills in an environment like an African savannah compared to an English grassland is different already without taking into account their population changing.

I don't see how this is pointless. I'm trying to say that it's not far fetched this particular anthill really is this old. You seem to be getting a little bit confrontational though.
#117 to #116 - hassoutobi (18 hours ago) [-]
But...they're still ants.

...

I'll stop replying,then...
#118 to #117 - broswagonist (18 hours ago) [-]
Remember, pigeons and hawks are still birds.
#119 to #118 - hassoutobi (18 hours ago) [-]
They are. both build nests too. The nests are different but they're still nests.
User avatar #120 to #119 - broswagonist (18 hours ago) [-]
But that doesn't mean they build their nests in the same way or even with the same materials. Some birds don't build nests. Compare swallow nests - even in this family of birds tree swallows nest in holes in the trunk of trees, while cliff swallows build their own out of mud.
#121 to #120 - hassoutobi (18 hours ago) [-]

User avatar #107 to #100 - flamingpie (01/11/2016) [-]
This wasn't/isn't bait, like I understand scientific discovery but I genuinely think its sad that filling ant colonies with metal/cement has become a thing. Like yeah I think its great to understand the species better, and I'm not saying we shouldn't do this stuff, but I still think it's sad.

siafu ants are one of the few species on this planet that hunts humans predatorially.
like no ******* joke. we are on the goddamn menu for these evil little bastards

theres a few cases this has ACTUALLY HAPPENED or nearly so
#44 to #29 - anon (01/10/2016) [-]
You realize they don't actually HUNT people right?
They form caravans that sometimes go through villages. If they happen to go through your hut at night, yeah, they gon bite the **** out of you. If you're old, unwell, handicapped, or too young, you won't be able to get away and might die.
But they don't actively hunt human beings. If they did, there would be more than a few recorded instances of deaths caused by them.

Also, fun fact: When they swarm you, you don't die from the bites. You die from them suffocating you as they clog your trachea when they crawl down your throat.

ok first off i never said they actively hunt us. but that they do hunt us predatorially. meaning they have us on the menu. along with literally every living creature in their way.

very few creatures are that vicious.

You're retarded so you should shut up.
User avatar #84 to #55 - broswagonist (01/10/2016) [-]
You keep using that word. As long as you keep using the word hunt, you are saying they actively hunt us m8
#85 to #84 - skelebones (01/10/2016) [-]
you clearly dont know what hunting means then.
to be on the hunt. or of the word hunt at all

when siafu go on the hunt, we get in their way, we end up being prey.

they dont go out and actively search us out. i never said that to begin with. but they do hunt us if we get in their way.

lurn 2 reed m8
#86 to #85 - broswagonist (01/10/2016) [-]
No, m8, to hunt means to actively pursue something with the intent to kill or catch it. That's not a definition you can change here. By your definition, as humans we hunt every roadkill. That is not true.

#87 to #86 - skelebones (01/10/2016) [-]
no youre confusing "hunt down" with "hunt"
the definition changes depending on how u use the word.

also no roadkill is more of collateral than anything. hunt has nothing to do with it unless you actively drive your vehicle with the express purpose of mowing down animals

User avatar #88 to #87 - broswagonist (01/10/2016) [-]
No, hunt down and hunt have the same meaning. The siafu ants for caravans to search for food, but humans are not a target any more than roadkill is to us.
#111 to #88 - skelebones (01/11/2016) [-]
like i said yes we are if we get in their way.

not only do u not understand definitions you seem to fail reading comprehension
User avatar #114 to #111 - broswagonist (18 hours ago) [-]
Reading comprehension has nothing to do with this. I'm directly disagreeing that hunt down does not = hunt and saying that by getting in their way we are not being "hunted" by them.
