As far as I know, in some species of ants the colony can last for an indefinite amount of time if its lucky. Kinda like that jellyfish or lobsters, if it avoids being wiped out the same line of ants can inhabit a colony forever.
Also as far as I know there is no way to do more than estimate the age of an ant hill due to all the factors involved, but I do know that very large anthills have been (probably loosely) estimated to have been up to 150 years old assuming development continued over that time.
but that one is not that large. If you compare it to other types of anthills found in Africa then it's pretty small.
Anyways you're missing the point. The point is that ''ruining'' one of these colonies for the sake of better understanding how ants live and create their colonies is not a bad thing, expecially when there are thousands of colonies like this one out there, and billions of ants.
"Just from different locations and made by different species" actually means quite a lot of factors are different, and it's very likely the speed at which two different species of ants build anthills in an environment like an African savannah compared to an English grassland is different already without taking into account their population changing.
I don't see how this is pointless. I'm trying to say that it's not far fetched this particular anthill really is this old. You seem to be getting a little bit confrontational though.
But that doesn't mean they build their nests in the same way or even with the same materials. Some birds don't build nests. Compare swallow nests - even in this family of birds tree swallows nest in holes in the trunk of trees, while cliff swallows build their own out of mud.
This wasn't/isn't bait, like I understand scientific discovery but I genuinely think its sad that filling ant colonies with metal/cement has become a thing. Like yeah I think its great to understand the species better, and I'm not saying we shouldn't do this stuff, but I still think it's sad.
siafu ants are one of the few species on this planet that hunts humans predatorially.
like no ******* joke. we are on the goddamn menu for these evil little bastards
theres a few cases this has ACTUALLY HAPPENED or nearly so
You realize they don't actually HUNT people right?
They form caravans that sometimes go through villages. If they happen to go through your hut at night, yeah, they gon bite the **** out of you. If you're old, unwell, handicapped, or too young, you won't be able to get away and might die.
But they don't actively hunt human beings. If they did, there would be more than a few recorded instances of deaths caused by them.
Also, fun fact: When they swarm you, you don't die from the bites. You die from them suffocating you as they clog your trachea when they crawl down your throat.
ok first off i never said they actively hunt us. but that they do hunt us predatorially. meaning they have us on the menu. along with literally every living creature in their way.
No, m8, to hunt means to actively pursue something with the intent to kill or catch it. That's not a definition you can change here. By your definition, as humans we hunt every roadkill. That is not true.
no youre confusing "hunt down" with "hunt"
the definition changes depending on how u use the word.
also no roadkill is more of collateral than anything. hunt has nothing to do with it unless you actively drive your vehicle with the express purpose of mowing down animals
No, hunt down and hunt have the same meaning. The siafu ants for caravans to search for food, but humans are not a target any more than roadkill is to us.
Reading comprehension has nothing to do with this. I'm directly disagreeing that hunt down does not = hunt and saying that by getting in their way we are not being "hunted" by them.
Are you ******* stupid or something kid
Stfu and stay in school. Unless yer mama homeschools your retard ass ifthats the case then kill yourself cuz theres no ******* hope for you
It was my intention to argue semantics from the beginning, anon. I'm not trying to lead anyone on, that was the point of the argument from my first reply.
>>#9
also wheres your hypocritical ******** bleeding heart for the millions of other nature related problems caused by man and our science? no ******* where to be seen thats where. why? because who gives a **** . some ants are an invasive species that should have been eradicated long ago. other ants are a destructive species that ******** up. and ants in general are violent ******* creatures.
some dude once said if ants had nukes, the world would be over in a week.
these hateful little bastards go to war with other colonies every goddamn day.
theres a joke to be made about how pathetic you are translating to playing games with yourself
but i have to go to work because i have a job and a life.
so ill let you make that connection.
you miss understood what i was trying to say. The point was killing ant colonies is something thats completely acceptable even on the national/global scale so who cares if one colony gets killed over science?
If ants could think, I wonder what they thought as hot liquid metal poured down their hallways - melting and burning up everything they knew on their way - before ultimately giving you the same destiny. There was no escape, only metal.
those poor god damned ants, searing hot metal sent them all to hell.... that had to have taken forever to build, and they cant rebuild it, the heat had to have taken out the brain of the operation
