They are the first "things" and don't have anthropomorphic forms, like the Titans and Olympians. Uranus (sky) and Gaia (earth) were the ones who produced the Titans. But there were several others, the first being Chaos.

Seriously, stuff like this will give us a bad reputation as irrational woman haters.
Think about it... a human female + a being more powerful than a human produces a being with power inbetween them. No **** it'll get weaker, it's exactly the same result if you put a man with a goddess and then a man with a female demigod.
