grade point averages. its out of 4.0.
User avatar #74 to #22 - mewoveyouwongtime (07/20/2014) [-]
A = 4.0
B = 3.0
C = 2.0
D = 1.0
F = 0.0

In some cases other schools (mainly colleges/universities) go by this scale:

A+ = 4.0 A = 4.0 A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3 B = 3.0 B- = 2.7
C+ = 2.3 C = 2.0 C- = 1.7
D+ = 1.3 D = 1.0
F = 0.0

In other cases, the GPA can be based off an adjusted score, seeing as the student took honors/AP classes (these can be mixed with non-honors/AP courses to find the final GPA.) To find the adjusted score all you have to do is add 1.0 to your normal score, unless it's and F.

EX: An A in Calculus is 4.0, but and A in AP Calculus is 5.0

This is why some students get GPA's above 4.0

and yes, I did just spend 15 minutes writing this explanation up when I could have simply left it with the regular 4.0 scale. But I felt like this broader explanation would be more appreciated, when in reality, it won't be.

This is my life now...
User avatar #140 to #74 - chimpaflimp (07/20/2014) [-]
Sooo...big number = better grade? Why can't they just give you your average grade instead of a ******* number?
User avatar #142 to #140 - mewoveyouwongtime (07/20/2014) [-]
They do though. When you put them together to see what your grade point averrage (GPA) is they use numbers cause you can add 4+4+3+4+2 and divide by 5 (GPA: 3.4), but you can't add A+A+B+A+C and divide by 5.

Don't know if that's what you were asking but yeah, hoped it helped. It seems pretty simple to understand but it's probably because I've lived with this system all my life.
User avatar #143 to #142 - chimpaflimp (07/20/2014) [-]
In the UK they take how many of each grade you got on tests throughout the year and tell you what your average grade was based on that. Like, In English I've gotten Bs and A*s but never any As, so my average is A.

I just climbed above a 2.5 and now I'm gonna fall back down below it because I'm constantly in the VA hospital for all my injuries and **** . To be fair, I'm constantly switching colleges, so GPA just resets each time I do so. The only reason I climbed above a 2.5 is because I got like a 3.4 or some **** , considering I got nearly top grades in both classes I took last semester.

It's basically all ********* . I'm wondering whether or not I could graduate Magna Cum Laude simply because I take 99% of my classes at University of Phoenix, then take one class at Harvard to finish my Doctorate with Top Honors.
User avatar #99 to #98 - narddogg ONLINE (07/20/2014) [-]

No. I'll have my Associate's by the end of this semester, then my Bachelor's in less than a year. Then I'll probably commission back into the military. I kinda want to go back Navy, but Army ROTC guarantees me a job and will continue to pay me to go to school until I complete my Doctorate, then I'll get a guaranteed job at the rank of O-4. I could do worse.

My experience is that the ones who are going to be successful in life have good but not ridiculous grades. Someone with a 3.9+ is usually in a really easy program or devotes too much time to school and does not develop the many other important skills that higher education is supposed to give you (communication, time management, widening perspective, etc.)
User avatar #149 to #96 - talldumbdork (07/25/2014) [-]
My experience at UC Davis in California is 4.0s do not exist (very rare) Too many professors have their own opinions on essays or test grading. Anything about a 3.5 was successful. Idno what grading system the creator of the comic reffered to, but a system i am familiar with seems to be the same as this one.

Basically you get a grade from 6 to 1 (A to F), and all your final grades are added up and divided by the amount of classes you participated, which is shown in your report card.

Eks.
P.E 4
MATH 4
SOMETHING 3
AODSFSG 4
= 15 / 4 Classes = 3,75 (Which is probably adjusted up to 3,8)

Sorry english is not my first language.
#58 to #56 - notjewelry (07/20/2014) [-]
The comic is talking about GPA
A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = 0

Oh okay, my bad.
#63 to #60 - notjewelry (07/20/2014) [-]

A = 5
B = 4
and so on

Just a quick question, is there any reason the rankings are ABCDF and not ABCDE?
#66 to #65 - notjewelry (07/20/2014) [-]
The grading system has only 5 grades, which should be A through E, but in order to make it more obvious that you're failing, they changed E to F. F of course = failing. Kinda weird, but it gets its point across.

And here I am not understanding this at all. The number nonsense with grades, not the actual joke.
User avatar #34 to #33 - rollertoaster (07/20/2014) [-]
GPA goes from 0.0-4.0, with 4.0 being the best and very difficult to attain.

And what is GPA? I assume it's something to do with the American education system because I haven't come across it in the UK Education system.

Grade Point Average. Somebody thought it would be a good idea to extrapolate a 100% grading scale to a 0.0-4.0 scale, and then force us to re-convert it to figure out anything meaningful about our grade totals. This is just another one of those things that gives non-Americans ammunition to insult us with, because it's total ******** .

Ah I've come across something similar in my A-Levels. We have UMS marks which are annoying to convert into and out of just to get the actual mark which gives the over all grade.

Sounds like roughly the same deal. Glad it's not just us with the stupid and overcomplicated system.

My high school had AP classes so my GPA was always around 4.5. Never got anything for them from dad at the time. But it pays off, I have the units to get out of college a year early.
User avatar #37 to #32 - blokrokker (07/20/2014) [-]
Last I checked, GPA only goes up to 4.0.

AP is graded on a 5-point scale.
User avatar #44 to #43 - blokrokker (07/20/2014) [-]
I knew that, but he specifically referred to his GPA being ~4.5
#45 to #44 - gjsmo (07/20/2014) [-]
Oh right. GPAs based on 5-point tests are also 5-point. It's less common, but happens.
User avatar #47 to #45 - blokrokker (07/20/2014) [-]
That's just too complicated. Why so inefficient?
User avatar #48 to #47 - azumeow (07/20/2014) [-]
Because it's the education system, of course! Efficiency is communism!

I took IB. It's graded on a 7 point scale. SATs are graded on a 2400-point scale, ACTs on a 36-point scale.

Meanwhile Europe decided that 10 was a really convenient number and went with metric and 100 point scales.
User avatar #139 to #53 - blokrokker (07/20/2014) [-]
And we wonder why Americans get **** from Europeans. One thing that always sort of confused me was why the SATs actually have a MINIMUM score. Seems rather pointless.

A new car for a 3.8? I got a 4.0, my gift was graduating. Damn kids are spoiled as **** .
