Wiped out by hairy savages in 476 AD.
The Mongol Empire. The widest empire Earth had
ever seen, shattered in pieces shortly after the
death of its founder, in 1227.
The Byzantine Empire, heir of both greek and latin
cultures, ruled the birthplace of civilization.
Definitely conquered by Turks in 1453.
San Marino. A ******** of republic, sitting on a rock
and watching the sea all day. Founded 301 AD.
Still alive today.

The western half of the Roman Empire wasn't defeated solely by the barbarian and steppe tribes. By 476 it was a shambling ruins compared to it's former glory because of all the corruption, greed and civil war as well as Rome being sacked several times by the Huns and the Goths. Though when the Goths sacked Rome, it was just the straw that broke the camels back.

However, the Roman Empire wasn't completely gone. What we call the Byzantine Empire was actually the eastern half of the Roman Empire with it's capital being Constantinople, which survived long after the West had fallen. The term "Byzantine" didn't appear until 1557, and until then they were called, and called themselves, the Roman Empire.

Just a bit o' knowledge for youse guise.

Ottoman empire just finished the job. Greatest blow came from Venice (I spit on them). Their false crusade and back stab dealt blow to Eastern Roman Empire from which it never recovered

Mongols lasted a good while after Genghis, reached its largest under Kubilai Khan and sort of split into smaller Khanates all over, the Golden Horde was a threat to Europe until around 1400 when Pope Boniface IX launched a crusade against them. Temur/Tamerlane was also a serious threat to the Turks and others in the near East till around the same time. They may not have lasted as long as the Romans but their empire was vast, especially for such a primitive people.

I don't understand the hate for polandball. This is one of the few internet trends I actually enjoy because it requires some knowledge of geopolitics and history.

Just saying but.....
The Roman empire was "finished off" by the Germanic tribes, the Romans destroyed themselves with politics.

So is the UN or the US considered the largest empire now? Since, you know, the US goes and declares democracy in other places that don't want it and all.

San Marino is insignificant and that is why it is still around. They have no great ambitions, they dont want to take over rock next to them. No one sees them as a threat so people just leave them be.
