Excellent idea. But couldn't they just replace the light with the number and maintain the same order and color for them, that way they don't have to have two lights (a number and a regular circle)?

Very true. It's certainly better than not having it.

Aside from the fact that I'd pretend I was in the Fast and the Furious when I'm a quarter mile out and see 10 flashing...
A good traffic light is on sensors. This means that they will change depending on the flow of traffic.
ANYONE who lives in a major city and drives knows how annoying it is to sit @ a red light with 30 cars behind you while NOTHING goes thru the intersection.

the problem is that you get people who go 100mph just to avoid waiting for the stoplight

I'm pretty sure at least 50% of lights in America do this already.
When the light is green and you look at the pedestrian crossing going parallel to you, you'll notice they have a count down timer. When that timer reaches 0, most of the time your light will turn yellow.

But you're suppossed to slow down. A red light doesn't create a magical barrier. You slow down anyway and if it turns red and you can safely stop, you stop. If you can't stop safely, you go. Simple as that.

Not all lights are based upon timings. some are based upon sensors

yellows light just need to last longer -o-

they make em last so short especially in sections where a high speed limit is, no time to stop when it suddenly changes from green > yellow > red in like 2 secs

I could totally see people speeding through an intersection..yes this is a great idea but in this case one solution causes another problem
User avatar #47 - hentaisweetie (08/06/2014) [-]

They don't do this in most countries for one reason: Speed of cars increases as time decreases. It's the exact same as how yellow is supposed to mean slow down, but most people just accelerate.
