I actually decided to watch some soccer at work today. It's almost amazing how many people cry when their team loses. I mean, it's a game. People moan about how crazy we are about baseball/ (American) football, then you see that.

People cry during intense bodyloveing movies and your shocked that someone would cry seeing their country lose in arguably the biggest sporting event in the world?

If people can cry over the death of fictional characters in movies, then this shouldn't surprise anyone.

don't forget there are a lot of gamblers in the world, people put wagers on matches as well. can be pretty cry-worthy if you loose a decent amount of money.

It's a matter of national pride. For players, it is the culmination of 4 years of super intense training. For the fans, it's about following the players on their journey, knowing they need you're support and love to give it all they've got in order to become champions of the only sport played all around the world. Things like football and baseball are yearly events and it doesn't really create the same feeling of nationalism since teams represent cities in a single country instead of an entire, unified nation against the world.

Screw four years. Most of the German team has been playing together since 2004, reaching at least the semi final in every major tournament since 2006 as well as having Jogi Löw as (assistant) coach for all that time as well. Most of the German team has been waiting for and working towards this moment for 10 goddamn years.

Some longer than others, of course.

i'm not a big futbol fan, but i'm argentinean and when the world cup starts it just takes over you. you start caring, maybe you only care because you make time to go see the match with friends, but its an event.

this world cup i got the pleasure of seeing my country go all the way to the final and get better with every match. we didn't win and i sure as hell wasnt happy we lost, but i am SO proud of how far we made it and enjoyed the feeling of getting closer and closer every match

It's passion man, there's no real way to explain it. Some people love the sport (hence the crying fan camera shots) and some people just watch the World Cup every 4 years, but either it's just an appreciation for it.

I used to think that way until recently. There's a lot of skill involved. If you look at the players when they collide you see that they're going really fast. The average player in the world cup ran about 10km each game. If nothing else I respect them and their abilities. It's like a video game in that when they set up a play with a perfect pass it's exciting, but the difference is that it's not a video game and they're not just pressing buttons to move. I also remember, I think it was on Hey Arnold, where the son has nothing in common with his dad until he tries watching a baseball game and sees how it all comes together like a dance. Speaking of dance, the players have to be really light on their feet. Try watching this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pPWe8Rjl9U

Other nations take pride in working towards finding cures for diseases, developing alternative energy sources, looking for ways to minimize human suffering across the world and what soaks the panties of the entire earth is a sport, shameful, there should be annual festivals in honor of people like Jonas Salk and Nicola Tesla

And it's quite frankly getting old.
Sure, we shouldn't forget it but it's been 69 years.
The only surviving perpetrators are well into their late 80s or 90s.
But why notfocus on more modern issues, e.g. that America, since 2005, has killed an estimated more than half a million of it's own citizens due to the failure to provide insurance for them.

Well, China, Russia killed far more people in their Genocides.
Not that it makes it any less bad what happend, but still.
And hardly anyone ever talks about the fact that the Brittish starved a few million people to death on purpose during WWII, and it is only rarely that people talk about the fact that the USA forced Japanese Americans into concentration camps, or "internment camps", as they called them.
But still, yes, between 4,8 and 5,86 million Jews died in Nazi concentration and death camps, as well as other people.
