I always thought they originated from two sided hatchets for some reason. Maybe because they're more bulk near the end of the sword.

All I know is they kicked so much ass. Xyphos was a nice sword when it came to weight and range, just in that area between sword and dagger, I think they're called sabres at a certain length.
