Why did two of the judges know the song? How popular is The Fifth Element over there?
User avatar #25 to #2 - touchmybutt (12/04/2015) [-]
The judges, the skinny guy, i'm pretty sure that's vitas, so he obviously knows of it
#27 to #25 - kunchuma (12/04/2015) [-]

All those thumbs up on your comment. I dont get it. Why they arent suppose to know this movie? The Fifth Element wasnt some "arthouse" **** nobody knows about, was it?
User avatar #5 to #2 - goodhomer ONLINE (12/04/2015) [-]
The song is Il Dolce Suono, it's part of an aria from Lucia di Lammermoor.

No I didn't know that before this. I literally just googled it.

Ahhhhh, that does make more sense.

It's funny you should say that because Vitas did a cover of this song.

Vitas - Lucia Di Lammermoorr (il dolce suono)
User avatar #26 to #6 - Tusura ONLINE (12/04/2015) [-]
I may hate some of this guys songs, but goddamn does he have an impressive vocal range.

When I was still singing, I had a 4 octave range, but it started at low bass and went through high tenor. I couldn't hope to hit those high notes in a million years.

This was a masterful performance.

That video looks cropped and it makes me angry.
User avatar #10 - coledunk (12/04/2015) [-]
I don't understand the chair thing. why did she turn her chair one second into the performance but the other two didn't? Isn't this a kind of competition?
#11 to #10 - nekolacek (12/04/2015) [-]
I think its so they dont judge by appearance, but performance... i think.. i dunno...
#12 to #10 - anon (12/04/2015) [-]
if I recall correctly, it's a two-part thing.

1) they don't want to judge the contestants on anything but their voice, so they don't see said contestant until they've made a decision

2) if they decide they like the contestant, they hit the button, turning them round.
User avatar #17 to #10 - whatsnottaken (12/04/2015) [-]
In addition to the other responses, the judges also have a limited amount of people they are allowed to have on their "team" and if they reach that number they're buttons are essentially turned off. at least as far as I'm aware
User avatar #18 to #17 - whatsnottaken (12/04/2015) [-]
their*
User avatar #13 to #10 - nithorry (12/04/2015) [-]
Like the others said, it's soo they only judge by voice alone.
Once you press your button you are then saying ''i want to coach this person in the competition''. So often a judge won't press a button even if the person is good, as they don't feel they have the skill required to coach the persons singing style.

At least, thats the jist of it

My favorite has to be Madame Butterfly. Nothing wrong with having your own taste, mate.
User avatar #69 to #56 - rudeobuteo (12/05/2015) [-]
Puccini is one of the greats. (no I did not google that before I said it)

Verdi is on par with Mozart (almost), Mendelssohn and Schubert in ingenuity of writing imo, probably the best Italian. Wagner is long-winded but his explorations in tonality were earthshattering on par with Beethoven. R Strauss ameliorated some of Wagner's innovation with more concise music imo.
Ravel, however is my favorite:

I think she was singing one particular song performed in an opera-like setting in an alien future setting in the film The Fifth Element. The actual performer is, if I'm not mistaken, Vitas (the strange Ukranian cosmonaut dude "ah ah ah"), and he does a ******* killer falsetto. So she was just emulating that song.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves - these "talent shows" are nothing more than entertainment for the lower class. Anyone worth their salt knows musicianship is about dedication, talent, practice, and setting. A good writer can have a **** performance and a practiced performer can be **** at composing. Any self-respecting musician would not enter a talent show unless trying to do some edgy art thing.
User avatar #72 to #71 - rudeobuteo (12/06/2015) [-]
I'm familiar with the song from the movie, and I don't think it was Vitas...I think.

But yeah that's a good point about the "real artist" thing.

#67 - therwasno (12/05/2015) [-]
ih she has sung life ..its pretty good i think .no real opera singer would even try to do this high pitch voice shifts....also she is a cutie .9,0 The movie is in my opinion one of the worst overrated movies ever, huge utterly ******** , most memorable scene was the ugly woman in blue latex decorated with platic tubes with a computervoice..just cringeworthy 1,0
#62 - peterdivine ONLINE (12/05/2015) [-]
She was good, sure, but she wasn't perfect. She clearly struggles with timing and the ability to alter her pitch rapidly.
