not an expert in physics, but i think i understand this.

When the train is moving at a certain speed, everyone on the train is also moving at that speed. But if you time this just right, so that you're not touching the floor of the train when it starts moving (or sharply changes speed) then everyone else on the train, and the train itself, will be moving at a different speed from you. Incidentally, this relativity of speed is why you can't save your life by jumping out of a falling plane/elevator at the last second.

The train moving in the opposite direction does NOT actually extend the distance travelled in absolute terms, but if you do it as mentioned above, it will extend the distance you travel locally, ie, how far along the train carriage you go.

Physics is pretty cool.
