Would plate armour similar to knight armour be good in a firefight?
I know, modern militaries use steel plates as chest armour, but I'm talking about entire outfits.
Well, that depends on what you mean. Like, authentic medieval armor? Absolute garbage in a firefight. The way it was constructed was primarily for redirecting weapon blows, but bullets, which move at a much much higher velocity are a little more persistent.
Of course, if you mean modern extrapolations of full armor, then of course. Like you said, that's what soldiers wear now. The difference is where medieval armor is meant to take a beating, modern bulletproof vests really can only save you from a few shots, enough to get out of the line of fire.
Warfare is all about practicality. Big, clanking steel armor went out of style for a reason.
