its a terribly sad scene where brooks (i believe was his name) or the old man was released from prison but he had been there so long and became institutionalized and was frail and couldn't live outside any more ended up committing suicide by hanging himself alone and unloved in a halfway house

Couldn't a really rich person just buy hella tickets and then win the 1.3 bil? Like, im sure putting a million down to win that much would be easy winnings
#7 to #4 - anon (14 hours ago) [-]
I'm not from the US so I don't know how powerball works, but usually the total possible combinations number is so massive that buying a ticket for every single one of them would be ridiculously expensive and most likely more expensive than the prize. And there is also the possiblity of someone else hitting the jackpot, and forcing you to split the prize.

That, of course, assuming these things are even allowed and you are not planning on doing anything illegal.
#9 to #7 - ellojello (14 hours ago) [-]
The total number of combinations is slightly less than 300million, so you could theoretically do this and make money; however, there are several rules against doing as such.

I believe they came about after the mafia, or a mafia-esk organization, did just that when the jackpot was big enough to make a profit. It was deemed "unsportsmanlike" or "not in the spirit of the game" or some other such thing and there were rules put in place banning this activity. It's a little like counting cards at a casino, sure it's technically fair play but if they catch you doing it you're ******* out and have to turn over your winnings.

Yes, a really rich person could buy enough tickets to turn a profit (provided someone else didn't win, in which case the pot would be split). However, the lottery association that manages the games has rules in place against this. It's a little like counting cards at a casino, not technically illegal but if they catch you doing it you have to turn your winnings over and they kick you out.

The officials deemed it "unsportmanlike" or something like that after some mafia-esk group did just what you suggest. Since there is about 300million ticket combinations, there would really be no way for you to buy ALL of them without the lottery association noticing since they track all the ticket sales.

Well, yeah, hypothetically you could. There's been this chingchong rich peeps club who bought 1000s worth of lottery tickets and won less than they put in. The chance is really, really, REAALLLLYYY small.
#15 to #4 - mindyourownbusines (12 hours ago) [-]
To buy all the tickets in time for the drawing "you'd have to recruit 565 people, each of whom you'd supply with around $620,263 to play the $2 game." And it would cost you nearly $400 million total, plus any splitting of prizes with the 565 people you hired and the risk of giving out that kind of money to buy with in the first place.

As of 2006 there were an estimated 5,000 families with over $100M in assets and cash. Assuming big assumption, I know the wealth of these families is spread evenly between $100M and $18.5B Bill Gates my rough calculation is that less than 4,150 families share about $400M or more. Again, assuming that people on the lower end of the spectrum wouldn't want to liquidate all their assets for the win I'll say only people with $410M+ should count, so that brings it around to 4,115 families.
www.quora.com/How-many-individuals-in-the-United-States-have-a-net-worth-of-100-300-million-dollars
According to CNN Money, "if a resident of New York City wins and takes the lump sum, he or she will only get about $495.8 million. The government will withhold about $327.2 million, nearly 40%." And based on one calculator, even in states where taxes are 0% the federal taxes will leave you with "only" $642.6M total.
money.cnn.com/2016/01/08/pf/taxes/powerball-jackpot-tax-bill/

That means if you (our hypothetical rich person) only kept what you invested plus 10% every person you gave the initial $642,600 to invest in tickets would only get back about $387,000. So, each one of them has almost double the incentive to just keep the stack of cash you gave them to buy tickets with and disappear... until the pot reaches about $786M after taxes or about $1.714B before taxes.
That's also assuming that nobody else does the same or gets lucky and you wind up splitting the prize further meaning you'd lose money on the deal.

Its been done by the mob. Some times doing it illegally by weighting numbers or something like that. Other times they have noticed loop holes in the betting where they could hedge their bets, think card counting type cheating where its no cheating but you are turning the odds in your favor.

Cost $583 million to buy them all
It'll take 9 years to fill them all out
If someone else wins you already loose half

Not worth the investment.

typically, attempting to buy up all possible number combinations leads to a net loss. no smart lottery will ever allow the prize pool to rise higher than that

TECHNICALLY speaking, it's possible to "buy" the powerball. The odds are listed on the back as aprox 1 in 292 million to win it. at $2 a ticket, that means you just have to spend close to $584 million to buy every possible outcome.

With the jackpot now being over 1.3 billion, makes ya wonder.

installments*
#24 to #21 - anon (9 hours ago) [-]
you get a 25th of it every year for 25 years usually
#25 to #20 - anon (9 hours ago) [-]
Installments have a set number of years, usually like 35.

The smart money is on taking it as a lump sum, and choosing to invest it with help from a trustworthy financial adviser.
User avatar #26 to #25 - mondominiman (9 hours ago) [-]
The problem with investing is that it's a gamble and even if you have a professional handle it it's not always a guarantee that your safe. Usually the biggest reason people take the lump sum is so they can splurge on that year and it's the reason they always go broke
