In case you guys didn't know, this is not a tortoise helping another tortoise out. They are both males and attempting to flip each other to assert dominance. It is an act of aggression. They will flip them right-side up just to repeat the process. You can't project human emotions and actions on animals, particularly reptiles, because most of the time, they function purely out of survival instinct.
Am I the only one that thinks this is just really cool. I mean, think about what we just saw in a tortoise:
First, the one recognized that another tortoise was flipped on it's back and wouldn't be able to get back on it's feet without help and was stuck and in trouble. That means it is capable of critical thinking.
Then it decided to help the other tortoise by flipping it back over. That's a demonstration of compassion.
Then, it got underneath and started pushing. As the one started to slip and roll in the wrong direction it adjusted its approach. That's a demonstration of problem solving.
Maybe it's just me, but I think that's pretty cool.
I hate when people say **** about how animals aren't smart, don't have emotions, all that **** . If a turtle can feel empathy, it can sure as hell feel all kinds of much simpler **** and possibly have complex thought.
