As far as I'm aware, Norway isn't legally bound by the IWC's moratorium on commercial whaling because they objected to it; whereas Japan didn't. So Japan can only legally do it for 'scientific research' - but why they'd need to kill them for research is questionable... Meanwhile, they can conveniently then sell the whale meat domestically as a by-product...

Norway hunts minke whale. Which has an estimated population in norway around 70k. And norway kills between 1k-1.5k whales each year. It is considered least concerned. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minke_whale ) Thats why

Do you get chafe marks from hugging all those trees?

Fact: hunters provide more funding to conservation groups and wildlife management than all other sources combined.

Fact: Zimbabwe earns about $200,000,000 annually on exotic hunting

Fact: Exotic and protected species that are hunted are used in their entirety by local populations. These hunts mean good meat and meals for people who are often going hungry.

Fact: Hunters are the greatest environmentalists in the world, sponsoring more national parks and saving more endangered species than any other conservation group. Many conservation groups are in fact funded by hunters and hunting, including the US game and Fish department.

Without hunting and its close association with conservationism the ecology all over the world would be extremely ****** up. They have undeniably solved more problems than they have caused from over hunting 100 years ago.
User avatar #136 to #30 - unikornking (12/02/2015) [-]
Are giraffes and the like hunted often in places like this? I've remained neutral to stuff like this, but typically it's exotic predators, I can't imagine anyone wanting to hunt a giraffe. Actually, I can't imagine that being much of a hunt at all, are giraffes even scared of humans?
User avatar #232 to #136 - lean (12/02/2015) [-]
There is an agency that attempts to monitor all legal exotic hunts that I can't recall the name of at the moment.... It isn't the African Wildlife Foundation, it's a different one.
The majority of hunts occur in zimbabwe and south africa, where they have the greatest wildlife management as well as designated state parks. (because there are more game species in these places due to conservation, weird)
I believe the stats are something like 15,000 guided hunts per year resulting in around 70% efficiency. USA is the #1 country where hunters come from, followed by canada, UK, and scandinavian countries. Total revenue generated for the continent is estimated to be over 1.2 billion per year.

Obviously the hunters could choose to hunt in legally grey countries for exotic game, but there is less game, less stability, and in a world where you are put on public trial like the Dentist from MN who legally shot Cecil (Zimbabwe did not press charges and in a statement said he complied with all laws) it's better to be safe than sorry. Most ethical hunters choose locations where their game is shared with the villagers nearby and the governments are strong enough to use the revenue for conservation.

Poachers are everywhere of course, but the posts like the one above are hunters who had the opportunity to harvest a once in a lifetime animal.

As far as giraffes, they are wild prey animals. They are as skittish as deer, albeit substantially larger. Most of these places are not petting zoo type farms, but wild and hazardous country. To put it in perspective white tail deer kill more people per year than bears in North America. A giraffe could easily kill a human. People have it in their head that so many of these exotic game animals are gigantic majestic pets. I challenge any of them to try and pet one, even in a zoo.

The many save the animals activist groups will tell you that in the last 30 years the African giraffe population has been cut in half. What they neglect to say is that the majority of this is due to human development destroying habitat, not overhunting. In the same amount of time, zimbabwe and South Africa have tripled their populations of giraffe, because they practice active conservation.

I personally wouldn't shoot one, because importation is almost impossible without tens of thousands of dollars, and I can't imagine they are good eating, but I won't judge anyone who legally takes one.

I mean the list goes on forever. Without the management funded by hunters the populations wither and die. Game species on the whole fare better than non game species all over the habitable world.

Hm, you're right. But they're still protected under some International whaling acto to maintain the whale population, however Japan continues to hunt whales claiming they're for "Scientific Research", despite whale meat beaing available throughtout Japan. That's what the uproar is about: Japan is using a loophole in international law to keep whaling, despite it's ban.
ALSO: i should have probably checked my facts b4 claiming they were endangered
#28 to #27 - affects (12/01/2015) [-]

User avatar #37 to #28 - drpenguinz (12/01/2015) [-]
hunting not endangered whales is as cruel as killing any other kind of animal.
why is killing a cow/pig less cruel than killing a whale?
User avatar #55 to #37 - cakefaceify (12/01/2015) [-]
Argument is that a lot of whale and dolphin species are self-aware. Brings in the moral dilemma of killing living beings that have a consciousness, just like we do.
User avatar #75 to #55 - bobtombobbob (12/02/2015) [-]
So are pigs camels and goats.
But people still eat them
User avatar #83 to #75 - cakefaceify (12/02/2015) [-]
Not necessarily. All mammals are not self-aware. For land mammals it's widely believed to be limited mainly to a select few primates. Research has only really extensively been done on primates/dolphins that sort of thing though
User avatar #237 to #83 - drpenguinz (12/02/2015) [-]
what do we interpret as self aware?
just because some animal doesnt understand a mirror, that doesnt mean its less cruel to kill it. it realizes it doesnt want to die and its in pain when held in **** conditions. thats how nature do.
User avatar #258 to #237 - cakefaceify (12/03/2015) [-]
Of course, but it's not always so black and white. An ant for example, while very much alive, is basically a biological robot. Signals fire off and it does it's programmed thing, it's pretty safe to say they don't suffer in the same way a cat would or a dolphin or a bird or a human. Difficult to know where to draw the line, but if we can't figure that out we can at least cut down on our indiscriminate slaughter of species especially those we figure to be intelligent.
User avatar #261 to #258 - drpenguinz (12/03/2015) [-]
yeah, ok, compared with bugs there is a difference. but thats an extreme comparison. the intelligence of the animals we compared before are about the same scale. a whale is not significantly smarter/dumber than a pig. and often its not even about that.
i mean...people would never kill their pets for example, even if it is "just a mouse/hamster" or some sort of spider. yeah, you have a connection to your pet, but how does your hamster deserve life more than "just some whale". intelligence is what we argue with, but its not actually the reason. we are just not used to whales being eaten over here in the western world. if you grew up eating whale meat you wouldnt care either.
User avatar #210 to #83 - orangelightning (12/02/2015) [-]
Pigs are way smarter than dogs tho and one of the tests they do to check self awareness is if an animal can recognize it self in a mirror and pigs can do just that while dogs can't even do that (at first anyway).
User avatar #230 to #75 - heartlessrobot (12/02/2015) [-]
Pigs might be kinda smart but they're still dumb as **** .
So are camels, they're dumber than horses, don't know about goats though.
#38 to #37 - affects (12/01/2015) [-]
They way in which they are killed is completely different.
A whale suffers for a long time after it is harpooned, a cow/pig doesn't suffer most of the time.
#96 to #38 - anon (12/02/2015) [-]
Wrong. Do a little research on how pigs are kept. In tiny boxes from the moment they're born, force-fed until by the time they're grown they can't walk under their own weight because their legs have broken and they've never been out of their several-sizes-too-small box.

Pigs suffer their whole lives. Whales die in a couple hours.
#123 to #96 - anon (12/02/2015) [-]
yeah but pigs are food brah, nothing more
User avatar #211 to #123 - orangelightning (12/02/2015) [-]
And so are whales to the japs so where does that leave us?
User avatar #231 to #211 - heartlessrobot (12/02/2015) [-]
Most Japs don't eat whales. In fact, more japs hunt whales than eat them.
User avatar #40 to #38 - drpenguinz (12/01/2015) [-]
thats how nature works tho
every animal suffers when killed in nature
and a whale still feeds way more people than a pig
and...
a pig lives his whole life in the same place, eating the same **** everyday, just waiting to get killed, there is nothing nice about their lifes. its not valuable at all.
a whale is free until it gets killed.
and thats why i really dont think killing a whale is more cruel.
#47 to #40 - anon (12/01/2015) [-]
Not every animal. Most animals are killed with a bite to the throat or some equivalent that stops bodily function and kills them quickly. A harpoon causes a lot more suffering
User avatar #68 to #47 - drpenguinz (12/02/2015) [-]
every large animal is killed slow and painful if there is a hunter to kill it
see buffalos getting killed by lions
they often take several minutes, start biting their dicks off and stuff to get them down. im not lying, there are enough videos on youtube
nature is ****** disgusting
yeah...if a puma kills some bird or something, that will be fast and painless.
User avatar #36 to #27 - Shramin (12/01/2015) [-]
Whale is delicious, I understand completely why they would keep hunting it if its in their culture.
User avatar #41 to #26 - crypticmerle (12/01/2015) [-]
I don't have an issue with hunting as long as it's permitted. I wouldn't have a problem for it if it weren't for the fact that they were breaking a law to do it. I don't care if they aren't endangered. They are basically saying - we know we've been told not to, but we're exempt cause **** you.
People aren't endangered, but it's still illegal to shoot a ******** who has done things in their life to deserve it. Does that mean we just go shoot them anyway cause the world won't miss them if we pick out a few of the bad ones? Hell that would be good for the human population actually.

If they lift the ban, then there's nothing we can do and they can go about their business. If they were at least told they could kill only those whales you mentioned that they "mostly kill" and left the other ones alone, then fine. But they don't. And I have a problem with people who think that they are above a law or an agreement without consequences.
User avatar #25 to #2 - ledd (12/01/2015) [-]
Now that they banned it, it is illegal.
You really think a government is going to say "lol k" when some outsiders tell them to stop? It's their business, they wont give up with some ban. I'm not justifying them doing it, Im justifying them not giving a ****
User avatar #229 to #25 - heartlessrobot (12/02/2015) [-]

Why do people like whales anyway? What have they ever done for us? Dolphins are understandable since they're cute and rescue people from sharks & drowning and stuff, but when was the last time anybody shook hands with a whale? You have to go pretty far out to see to actually find one and when you do find one you can't exactly shake hands with it.

I don't hate whales or agree with killing them into extinction, but people seem to get genuinely butthurt over creatures they know nothing about.
User avatar #46 to #32 - spearpwi (12/01/2015) [-]
Whales keep krill population down by eating about 40 tons (40million krill) a day. They play a massive role in keeping the balance of the food chain intact. If krill population was to explode, it would then serve to cause the producer in that food chain to eventually run out, resulting in a lowering of population of that food chain over the next few decades which could potentially be disastrous.

Have you been on this site in the past few weeks? Or been listening to American media? The response to those attacks has been insanely violent. I mean I'm all for ******** on the left wing for their blatant ignorance and ISIS is definitely a worse issue than Japanese whaling, but let's not forget that tons of Americans are advocating to "nuke the ********* ", and don't seem to care about the innocent lives that are actually lost daily in those regions. Islamic peoples have suffered violent attacks, even people who aren't Muslim but happened to have brown skin, and even if you by some twisted way think that's justified, we can't really say that there hasn't been an angry response.

Yeah well Japan has no standing military power other than the US and if we wanted to let it happen, we could literally just hand Japan over to China like a present.
User avatar #48 to #24 - anonemous (12/01/2015) [-]
that's not true, regular and reserve forces are over 300,000 personnel... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Self-Defense_Forces

Their military can make a bridge to Japan out of soldiers and squash everyone in Japan to death with bodies and they still would have more than half of their manpower left
User avatar #64 - draeman (12/02/2015) [-]
whaling in japan can literally be traced to 10,000 B.C.
Something that ingrained into a culture is going to be pretty ******* hard to stop- especially when some foreigners (which is something Japanese people are historically known to dislike) tell them to stop.
User avatar #227 to #64 - heartlessrobot (12/02/2015) [-]
Yeah but nobody consumes any part of a whale anymore.
It's pointless and a money sink.
#80 to #64 - anon (12/02/2015) [-]
yep, japan is not a country of intelligent individual human beings its a massive retard that uses modern ships to kill whales.

IS it really that ******* hard to comply with not killing a animal for no real good reason?
User avatar #85 to #80 - draeman (12/02/2015) [-]
I'm not saying Japan is stupid as a collective group- I'm Japanese myself.
What I'm saying is when something has been ingrained for so long into a culture, it's kind of hard to stop it immediately.
And there is good reason. It's their main food source- and has been for quite a while. "This history is an important part of why the Japanese continue to hunt whales. Attempts to stop the nation's whaling are perceived by many as a threat to Japanese culture. According to its defenders, eating whale meat is an old and impenetrable Japanese tradition. "No one has the right to criticize the food culture of another people," said Matayuki Komatsu of Japan's Fisheries Agency."

I'm not saying they're not being ignorant ; it is however ignorant to assume it's a matter of compliance

Also I used the manga image of Once Punch Man because it looked better.
Anime has only 9 episdoes anyways , you cheeky little cunt
btw What made you want to see a gay , ****** show for kids?

Yeah but I'm not that big on manga.
The only manga I'm reading is for Diamond is Unbreakable.
I watched it when it only had 5 episodes. Loved the art style because it reminded me of Kirby. After a few episodes I was like "man, I wish more people liked this show!" Then Jailbreak came out after a month I was like "I change my mind. Get rid of them." The fandom hd gotten worse since then now that tumblr saw a lesbian scene and was all "muh representation" instead of liking it for the show itself. And recently it's kind of ruined the show for me a bit because I feel as though it's lost its innosense now that people are using it to promote their views. So I hate the **** out of this fandom. But hey, at least it's not like Undertale's fandom.

In order of cringyness : Sonic fandom >MLP Fandom> SU fandom > FNAF fandom > Waifu weeb anime fandom (pic related)
I just don't know where to place Undertale here , it has a retro style , MEMES and people in the fandom are obsessed and push it into everything . (I have also seen a fat, crazy bitch draw the sans skeleton **** her and r34 of goatmom and other characters... What the **** ...)

I got into before the anime was announced. I'd stop but it's just too good.
The sonic fandom will always be at the bottom no matter what. It's a shame too since I was a huge fan as a kid. Also I hate that I know what you're talking about with the rule 34.
Also what's so bad about the FNaF fandom? I know it's demographic is usually autistic minecraft kids, but beyond that I didn't even know there was a fandom.
