My understanding is that before Jesus was born, people had to sacrifice animals to get God to forgive their sins. But since Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice, now all we have to do is ask and try not to sin again. But since humans are sinful by nature, it's pretty much an endless cycle of sinning, praying, and hoping that the good outweighs the bad around the time we die.
