Fear of the Weir

Someday. Neil degrasse Tyson is going to either read 'The Martian' or
see the film adaptation of it. When he does, he' s going to immediately
knowthat the sandstorm part at the beginning isn' t accurate to physics.
He' ll point out that the inertia ofa Martian storm isn' t enough to do
damage to anything.
The knowledge that this is going to happen haunts me.

Wait, why wouldn't a Martian storm have enough inertia to damage anything? is it the gravity difference?
User avatar #50 to #20 - datslok ONLINE (02/22/2015) [-]
it's because the atmosphere or Mars is so thin and because of gravity has so low pressure, that a storm of eartly storm speeds, wouldnt really contain that much energy, and there not do as much damage as one might think if only looking at the wind speed.
User avatar #21 to #20 - valyn (02/21/2015) [-]
no, its just that sand doesnt weigh enough to hurt metal vehicles. Bare skin maybe, but if you've got bare skin exposed on mars sand is the least of your worries
User avatar #23 to #21 - ScottP (02/21/2015) [-]
What if it's a lot of sand? Like...an entire planet's worth. Also each grain is the size of a boulder. Is there a word for that?
User avatar #25 to #23 - jokexplain ONLINE (02/21/2015) [-]
Yes. We call that "dndxplain ******* his party up again."
User avatar #27 to #25 - dndxplain ONLINE (02/21/2015) [-]
hey, this most recenty party got sand immunity! just wait until they get to the ocean!

A grain is a unit of measurement of mass equal to 64.79891 milligrams so no to any of what you did or might say

science fiction to be exact, which honestly has never been that realistic or authentic
User avatar #37 to #19 - zaywoot (02/21/2015) [-]
True, but knowing when stuff is wrong still takes you out of the moment and can easily ruin immersion and the story because of it.
User avatar #64 to #37 - sideism (02/22/2015) [-]
incase you cant tell, i was being sarcastic

People can accept magic and laser weapons, but not a slightly ineffective armor design or a black Spiderman.
User avatar #51 to #38 - yaybacon (02/22/2015) [-]
I don't really want a black spiderman just because its always been a white guy and I feel they're just making him black to go "look how pc we are!" If he does end up being black I'll still like marvel and go see the movies, I'd just rather they keep him white.
User avatar #63 to #51 - Kairyuka (02/22/2015) [-]
Honestly at least it would be something to make up for the fact that they're remaking Spiderman for the third time in ten years.

Doesn't it become the same as if I made a romantic comedy set in the US and there were pyramids in the middle of NYC without any explanation?
#48 to #36 - anon (02/22/2015) [-]
If it fits the context of the whole movie and is decently explained, I don't see why it couldn't be like that.

Because he's become so popular in the last 5 years with the younger generation that he's always going to a conference or giving a speech. He's inspired so many young kids to learn about our universe and the world around us that his impact is going to be huge in the next century. The first people to land on other planets will most likely have been inspired by people like Chris Hadfield and Niel deGrasse Tyson . The only reason Niel even became an astrophysicist was because he had someone like Carl Sagan to mentor him and show him another side of the universe which he didn't know existed. With the internet nowadays many kids will be exposed to this content and become inspired

He's an overglorified retard who doesn't deserve the praise he gets.

The thing is, it's better that people have him as a role model than Miley Cyrus or Kanye West, so we should continue to praise him even more.

User avatar #28 - adu (02/21/2015) [-]
To be frank, not every writer is going to have a PhD in astrophysics and astronomy, so you have to cut them so slack when writing science-fiction. If the common adult isn't bothered by the discrepancy, then it's fine for fiction purposes.
User avatar #39 to #28 - shogg (02/21/2015) [-]
Anyone who writes hard science fiction show know enough about science to write hard science fiction.
User avatar #41 to #39 - adu (02/21/2015) [-]
Knowing the weather patterns of Mars is not knowledge I would expect someone to have. There's more fiction than science in most science fiction.

It's about an astronaut who gets stuck on mars after being gravely wounded in a sand storm and has to survive over a year on mars with only his knowledge of engineering and ******* botany. Great read. 10/10 best book.
