I recently joined Creative Writing at school, and I have plenty of ideas for what to write, but thats the problem. I feel like one idea wouldn't go anywhere, then I try to think about another idea, but think that one wont go anywhere. Please help?
If while making one, you get enamored with it's setting, try to think of a beggining and an ending after you've written what you've come up with already.
I used to write all the time, and I can tell you that is the problem. Trying too hard, in my opinion forcing a topic or idea just comes out like a gross essay question on an SOL. If you have an idea that you enjoy, just do your best to run away with it as far as you can.
1) outline your story/ideas - this will tell you what parts of your story still need development (or to be condensed)
2) interview your characters - search for interview questions if you need, but this should uncover your characters motivations and/or give insight into their thoughts
I've got a couple ideas you could try.
The first is pick an x, and write a one page story about it. This probably needs more explanation so here, lemme give you examples. candychang.com/before-i-die-in-nola/ This may not look like much, but look at the pictures where the "before I die" boards are all filled in, there's actually some interesting stuff. One that caught my eye was "hug a sloth." Lemme go write this real quick: cheeseburgerinutah.tumblr.com/post/132928748036/brushing-a-last-fern-from-his-path-jeremy-saw-his yeah yeah, it's pretty **** but give me a break, it's 3 AM and I wrote it in 10 minutes
Or, you could go to scp-wiki.net , click random article, and write a story about whatever you get. Nah, I'm not gonna do this too, one was enough for now
OR or, you could just generate a name/city/etc. at nine.frenchboys.net/ and write a story about whatever you get.
Honestly, I don't ****** know, I just have a bunch of writing resources to hand and I thought it might be nice to have.
This isn't even a list anymore.
But now that I've done all this, I do actually have one specific recommendation for your specific problem. 1. Write down one of your ideas. 2. Use one of these things to write a super short story as a warmup. I say don't take more than 30 minutes-an hour on this, because you're not going for perfection, you just wanna get that creativity going. 3. Return to your original idea, then keep the writing going, just see where that **** takes you. Maybe it won't be worth following through to the end, maybe it will. That ****** up to you to decide.
An exercise that helped me fill out and finish a story is what I like to call "...And then he died." Think of a completely normal scenario and then come up with a way for your character to die. The better you get at it, the longer and more interesting the story becomes before the character dies a strange, fantastic, horrific, or depressing death. Might watch 1000 ways to die and then come up with other ways people could have died the same type of death.
Or...maybe I was just morbid when I was in Creative Writing club in high school...
if you are doing something you like keep at it
its better to do something that you like and go nowhere than do something you dont like and "go somewhere"
how about a story about a family that moves to a new community that happens to be infested with werewolves. there is a mother, a father a sister and the brother, who is the main character. his family gets infected and he needs to find out a way to cure them, whilst also not getting infected.
