Met a guy who suffered a lathe injury. While turning down and threading a piece, his pinky got caught in the chuck.....resulting in several ligaments and tendons/muscle tissue throuhout his arm being sucked out of his hand through the hole where his pinky was like spaghetti.....Respect the lathe. Fear the lathe.
rule number one about operating on any power is to make sure that the tool is turned off and unplugged. everyone knows it. even all you non carpenters/construction workers.
I've seen some lathe accidents in gif form on 4chan, i have always been afraid operating one and forgetting to do something like not tighten the chuck enough so the piece will just fly the **** in my face or worse, hurt some one else so i have to deal with responsibility and guilt instead of empathy
I understand that these videos are made to look pretty and everything... But damn, that feed with no cutting fluid or chip breaker? That tool isn't going to last 10 minutes.
In real life you wouldn't be able to see the part at all, because the coolant would be everywhere. Doesn't look nice but it's necessary for production.
Actually, the tool can cut without coolant just fine, especially since this is running at the speed you would use for a high speed steel tool. The video has been sped up significantly. You can tell that the tool is running slower because the swarf is not discoloured at all. But yeah, use coolant anyway, it does extend the life of the tool.
