So I'll openly admit that when it comes to the bedroom, I'm no stranger to BDSM. I also happened to read the first two 50 Shades books (never got around to the third).
Honestly, I can see why people wouldn't like it, but I don't get the constant trash talk. It's pretty much a niche-fetish erotica novel; _it's not meant to appeal to everyone.
If you don't like it, don't read it. But it's pretty childish to flame something to eternity (here's looking at you, people who were on the Twilight-hate-bandwagon a couple years ago) just because it's not your cup of tea.
It's poorly written drivel - even for its genre. It's objectively awful in so, so many ways.
It's not really the BDSM that bothers me, it's the terrible writing style. It has that ****** romance/fansmut style about it where the sex is overdone to the point of disgusting, and the rest of the book is just filler for the sex.
I'm perfectly fine with a lot of things in books (to a point), so long as it's well written.
I'm not an English major by any measure, and my opinion of the writing style is that it isn't the greatest. However, and this may sound crazy, but the writing style is
one of the biggest appeals that it has
. People reading the 50 Shades series are generally looking for a kinky smutbook, plain and simple. The lackluster, "weak" writing style is generally best for those types of "No-no Novels".
When we're reading a book, we usually get enjoyment out of the plot, characters, writing style, etc. For books like this, the enjoyment is from the feelings of lust. That's the biggest selling point, and it's only strength. By having subpar plot, writing, etc., we focus all of our enjoyment on the smut, giving us "more bang for our buck" so to speak.
Hm... I don't know about that. I criticize the book--not because of the BDSM--but because it feel like it's written from the point of view of a twelve-year-old who wants to have sex with a thirty-year-old.
Nothing in it makes me blush. It makes me sick because someone with no talent got famous while I'm sitting here after years of English and creative writing classes with no agent or book sales to show for it.
In my opinion, it's the principle of the whole thing that is controversial, not the sex...
I'd have to agree with you-ish. I mean, when Stephanie Meyer became a sensation over Twilight, I was a bit miffed. Not because I felt like I should've been in her position though, but because I know hundreds of works that were "better off" being published over her. Still, the market doesn't lie. She wouldn't have done so well if so many people didn't enjoy her writing. Same thing goes for Justin Beiber and whatnot.
Anyhow, I wish you the best with your own writing, (and to be honest I'm sort of interested in reading it). It's not always the people with talent, it's the ones with commercial appeal. It sucks, but it's how it works.
Sigh, I know it. The more people there are in the world, the easier it is to entertain them with garbage...
You can look me up if you want. I'm on Amazon under two different names. Amy Croall is my adult stuff and Ami Urban is my YA (Young Adult) stuff.
I don't know, maybe I'm weird, but I generally like my porn to be well written. Not Thoreau-Shakespeare-etc. level, but at least decent.
Oh, please don't think you're weird. Well-written erotica is the best in my opinion. This book is not for people who enjoy it well-written, which is a LOT of people. I agree with, and respect your views on smut books; I just wanted to explain why people love the book "despite its ****** writing".
Those are the kind of people I will never understand, but I get what you're saying.
