I was working earlier and I had a tag in my pocket due to working on the self-scans ( we keep tags on our passes so we dont have people leaving and losing them ) and I was doing a basket run and when I went outside, it went off and another couple **** themselves and looked really scared.

For a moment, just a small moment. I felt powerful.

a friends phone set off one of those once coming INTO the store, and on the way back out. Three clerks swooped down like wolves. "Next time you'd better stop or we'll call the COPS!"

Protip: Unless store security/management has actually witnessed you shoplift, (and by witness I mean saw you pick up an item, pass all points of sale and try to leave) they cannot detain you (detain = prevent you from leaving). Most people, when approached by store staff produce a receipt out of habit. However, you would be perfectly within your rights to keep going, even if you set one of these off.

Store Personnel must have "reasonable grounds" to believe you are engaged in shopkeeping to be able to physically stop you.

There are two exceptions to this. One is Advanced RFID detection which not only detects the radio waves emitted by anti-theft devices, but can scan them and identity the exact product in question. The second is private-membership stores like Sam's Club and Costco where the agreements state they have a right to do a receipt check as a condition of membership

Sauce: I worked security for 5 years

If you set one off and haven't stolen anything/don't look suspicious, just look back at your cashier, raise your bags slightly, 9/10 ten the cashier will tell you just keep going

I know that with cop cars. When they drive by I stare, hope they don't suspect anything (Since I haven't done anything), get uneasy and that just makes things worse. They end up never giving a **** though.

On a night I was driving around my drunk/semi drunk friends, I pulled up next to a cop car at a stoplight. I looked at my friends and said "3...2...1..." and we all started doing exaggerated "Night at the Roxbury" head movements while staring at the guy. He didn't know whether to lose his **** , or bring us in for terrorism.

Point is: They can be chill people if you treat them as such. They're only hardasses when the possibility is still out there that you'll shoot them in the face just for being a cop.

As someone who did a lot of dumb **** as a 16 year old, I can confirm that yes, those things do actually work.
User avatar #22 - masdercheef (04/06/2014) [-]
It's because you never know when something will go wrong and you could be accused of stealing something you actually paid for.
