assuming most of their crimes were harmless (besides beating her ex with a golf club and depending how much meth/xanax they were carrying) it's pretty believable that under any circumstance they wouldn't have gotten longer than 5 years. The average sentence for rape is 4-5 years. (just as comparison for something you would consider a horrible crime)

nope and that's even if the rapist is convicted since most cases are just he said she said and alcohol/drugs are involved so the victim has a hard time remembering what exactly happened. Some victims are ashamed and don't even report.
