musicians barely make any money from cd sales anyway after the retail store, record company, and mangers take their cut the musicians are left with like 15-20%, depending on their contract. Where musicians make their money is playing live shows, selling merch at those shows, and through their endorsements with guitar companies/drum companies, amps, etc.
TL;DR download all you want, seeing them live is where they make their money

i got a deal for him, and others who fall into this:

Quit using your opportunity to be heard to keep talking about how much money you have over and over again and maybe we'd be more likely to spend what little money we have instead of pirating it.

Hell, I make music - i'm broke as **** - and I STILL keep everything free download. I personally feel you should do music to do music...and in his position he can still make income through touring, merchandise, ect ect - there's a lot of musicians who DON'T have those income sources who would rather have 10 genuine fans torrent an album than 100 buy it and not give a **** about it.

With the overflow of music out today, artists who consistently get pirated should just be happy they have a fanbase. Hell, Bo Burnham released his comedy special free on netflix and youtube. Angel Haze released her entire debut album on soundcloud -

"Sorry to Island/Republic Records, but **** you...I got here doing this for my fans and if you guys don't feel the same, it won't stop me...I don't care what happens after this. The fans will get the music they were promised. And you guys [the label] just may learn to keep your ******* word." - Angel Haze

I don't try to justify it at all
if I can get it for free then I will. If not, then I'll pay.

just because someone's rich, doesn't mean its ok to steal from them
since when was that a viable justification?

Downloading music, usually I'm okay with. Artists make most of their money from touring anyway, unless it's a smaller band, then I'll usually pay for it.

I don't take anything else newer than 10 years old, though. Movies I don't pirate at all. Not because I can't, but because it's an industry that I want to work in and I sure as **** don't want any ****** taking my goddamn film I worked for years on.

TL;DR, I'm a slight hippocrite

i'm not gonna say downloading music is a good thing to do, but when the musicians start complaining that they're losing millions my only response to that is: who ever said musicians had to be multimillionaires? why can't they just live like someone who has a salary of 100k-200k because that's pretty damn good. you don't need to have 5 mansions and 2 jets to compliment your 4 bugattis that can all fit on your 200ft yacht. i really don't ever feel bad when they "lose" money because of downloads. end rant.

When i last saw one of my favorite musicians Devin Townsend live, he'd just brought out a new album and told everyone to download it if they can't be bothered paying for it, or just don't have the spare cash.

He just enjoys making music, and he wants his fans to hear it regardless of how much cash they have. I've seen him quite a few times now, and every time he packs out the place, he gets people out of the crowd to dance with him on stage, he makes eye contact with his fans, he talks back to people who shout stuff at him, he compliments those who show up in fancy dress... And he couldn't give 0 ***** if people download his albums, he actually endorses it.

He still makes money because people respect him and actually want to own his albums and wear his merch. Anybody who does it for the money, in my books aren't a musician, they're a ******* old boring business man.

>M-muh piracy

99% of people who pirate music wouldn't buy the song if they couldn't pirate it, they'd just listen to it on YouTube. Potential sales is different than sales. That's why game piracy if anything increases sales, it makes people talk about how good the game is, maybe purchasing it, and they weren't even gonna buy it to begin with.

Yeah, and that's all fine and dandy if you only listen to huge artists. You'd be surprised how hard it is to make a living off of music nowadays if you aren't in the top 50 of the billboard. The music industry has been shrinking steadily ever since1999. While this may not hurt all that much people like Akon and Kanye West you can be damn sure it hurts the smaller bands.
