I mean it's not all of America that's patriotic. Other countries have citizens who love their countries just as much as we do ours. I'm not crazy about America, especially in the politics, but this country and the people in it aren't bad.
Basically, think about the World Cup. Patriotism is a thing everywhere. If it wasn't, we wouldn't have people who gave a **** if their country won or not.

Because oftentimes the America shown is a bunch of obese people riding around in wheelchairs eating McDonalds and firing M16's in the air... And while plenty of Americans are like that, definitely not all, or even a significant portion. The American people agree to war wanting to help... But the path to hell is paved with good intentions. So while 99% of the time I really despise past action's of the American government, and alot of the stuff thats going on now, the 4th of July is when I can just forget that and say that this is Home. It's broken and messy and not perfect, but it's Home.

Well for me, it's all about what America is intended to stand for. People don't always act that way and sometimes try to twist the principals the nation was founded on for the day's political controversy/ conflict. But for me the core remains there and that is why I love this country. I know what we have, what it is worth, and all of the people who fought to ensure we have what we have. I am not willing to take it for granted, alot of people fought for a long time to make America into a good nation to live in. People just forget sometimes I guess and take things for granted. I hope that helps, I know it is a little vague...but this message is kind of long as it is.

I've spent a couple of minutes trying to make the right reply - one that wouldn't conjure up the stereotype of an ignorant pleb caught up in the hype. Because I feel that on the 4th of July, maybe this trivial comment is the least I can do. No matter what the causes, the personal intentions, the underlying motives, it all comes down to the fact that hundreds of thousands of Americans before me have died enduring what they saw as the right thing to do for their homeland, and their people. The fact that we are not a passive, cowardly entity, ashamed of our power. Americans are proud because pride is something you can share with anybody else here. Poor, white, ugly, banker, welder - you're a citizen of the United States regardless. And men before you gave their lives because they thought it was a concept worthy to bleed for. I am thankful and I am not ashamed to be an American.
Happy 4th of July

I find American patriotism to be very interesting. Especially when compared to my own country. Over here(glorious Netherlands) if someone started being as nationalistic as some people are in the US, the reaction would probably be: 'Dude don't act so dramatic, chill.' The two exceptions of course being: 'The World Cup football' and 'King's day'(Dutch 4th of July)
Americans seem to find a lot of pride in the origin of their country and their war for independence. This also correlates with the beginning of my own country; a war for, in the beginning, religious independence and later independence of Spain in it's entirely. After which we became the first republic in modern Europe, the first country without a king. But while I do find pride in our history, I have no need to show this to other countries or even my fellow countrymen. In a certain way I find pride in my country not being very prideful.
The last thing I often see in American patriotism is how often it goes back to being proud of soldiers who have died for their country or certain battles that happend in the past. Here I find a big difference with my own country. We haven't had a powerful military or fleet since the 17th century(when we were the last country to succesfully invade England. Suck it britfags!) and we're more of a trade/agricultural nation. So what is the thing we find pride in? In place of our military? For me it's how other countries view us. A nation of tolerance, of 'no-nonsense' and coolheadedness. 'Did you die for me country? Yes? That's stupid. If you can't win just give up. So what if they take our country? They won't take our culture or way of thinking. Be smart about. Just let the enemy in, comfort them, make them your friend. Less bloodshed and more lucrative for everyone.
I forgot to add one exception for noticable national pride: DON'T TOUCH SINTERKLAAS! IF YOU GET YOUR DIRTY FOREIGN HANDS ON SINTERKLAAS WE WILL ******* KILL YOU YOU HEAR ME?

I don't consider myself particularly patriotic, but I feel like the United States gives me more freedom and opportunity than other countries would. I realize it had its shortcomings, but I still enjoy living here.

Why is there anything wrong with being patriotic? I don't know your story, however my family has been in the states since before they were the states and we have deep roots in this nation, so naturally I have strong patriotism.
Every country has a deep, proud, and ongoing history that you should feel proud to be a part of.

Most of the "patriotism" I see on funnyjunk or online in general is just satire or mockery. Though, I see hoards of jingoistic Canadians and Swedes.
