I always imagined because he was a space ranger trained to react to dangerous situations and suddenly seeing all the local populace go rigid and still at the approach of a giant suggests that the safest course of action is to also go rigid.

Because he believes he is in a strange alien environment. He sees the locals doing something to avoid what he must believe to be a giant enemy, and thus he copies their actions to avoid detection and eradication.

Simple.

im pretty sure a trained astronaut knows "when in rome, do as the romans do" as in, these other people completely freeze up when a ******* kronos looking mother ****** enters the room, so he probably thinks its a defensive mechanism by the others to keep from being destroyed.

tl:dr, its a movie stop ******* questioning it.

Let's say you land on a planet. You can talk to all the people, but they all seem kind of crazy. They're saying things you don't believe, but what the hell, you guys can at least communicate so you get along for the most part. Suddenly a massive ******* monster starts coming your way, and they all freeze. You might not know what it is, you don't know whether it's hostile or friendly, but you know that you'd better ******* freeze too.

its a fair guess when you're dealing with things 20x your size

would you notice bugs as often if they never moved?
or would you dismiss them as marks on the wall, or lint on the ground?

Maybe it's encoded in their toy-brains to stop moving as soon as a human is watching

If you run into a bear, you're supposed to play dead. Maybe the same goes for a creature 10 times your size.

The same reason why you run to your room after turning off the lights in the hallway even if you know there is nothing there. Inbuilt nature.

In the second movie, didn't the other Buzz Lightyear say that all Lightyears were supposed to be in hyper sleep until authorized by higher personnel? Maybe Buzz was pretending to be in hyper sleep while in the box and when he got taken out realized that he was no longer in a stasis pod?

But then again, that doesn't explain why he goes motionless every other time Andy comes in, but I guess he did it because he saw all the other toys freeze up when Andy was going into his room and thought it was an effective defense strategy. Or I'm looking way too into this.
