To all those in the comments stating the birds just use whatever they find, keep in mind that learning has been found to be a trait of almost all animals, not just humans. Even worms have been shown to figure out what types of leaves to stuff their burrow entrances with, when given a choice. The birds may have started out randomly collecting cigarette butts, however down the line it is not completely unlikely that they eventually figured out the insecticidal properties. It could also be a demonstration of short term natural selection, meaning that birds who started using the cigarette butts were less prone to parasites and survived longer that those that did not. Since it is a relatively recent phenomenon we probably won't know exactly what is going on for a while.

No. They just pick up whatever **** they find. It's a happy coincidence.
Some of the more educated ***** will try and convince you otherwise.

Did anybody think that maybe the butts were warm at first so they took them to heat the nest up?
User avatar #40 to #37 - dederplaol (11/24/2013) [-]
do you know how short of a period the butts would be warm? unless they took them from peoples' hands there wouldn't be any heat left to use for their nest

living in the country I have found that birds build nests with whatever the **** they find, I saw a nest built out of floss and garden string.

I don't think the birds know the insect part, they just find all the buds around and use it as material.

This topic was on my Biology test, and one question came up "How can you count the amount of cigarette filters in a nest?" I was baffled so I just wrote down "Count them."
and got no marks for it...

The ends of the cigarettes aren't burnt, the tobacco is still brown and the paper isn't burnt. STAGED

The ends of the cigarettes are burnt, tobacco is generally brown no matter what, unless that tobacco has been burned directly (often times the burned **** will fall out of the butt with wind and whatnot) And I reiterate, yes the paper was burnt you dumb **** .
