Cover bands generally get hired more and paid more on local levels because at parties and whatnot people wanna hear songs they already know. But not ever cover group are lazy assholes. I'm the "eddie" in a van halen tribute group and I've spent about a thousand dollars on building 4 replica guitars, tons of practice and rehearsal hours learning the songs. Pic related it's 2 of the guitars I've made.

Well the talent I was looking more at athletes, you can't be an athlete and not be talented//work extremely hard.. Artists have more luck, I mean everyone is quite good but it does take luck to get big unless you're obscenely talented... But the pop artists have more of the "star quality" in terms of talent, more then just skill that makes them popular.

Ok i organiser music events regularly. This is how it actually is:

Musician:
Someone who wants £300 in advance for a 1 hour set
With a £500 PA you have to hire, because they can't be bothered to bring their own equipment
Who then drive 50 miles with petrol money paid for by organiser
Then demand a £200 rider and fresh hot towels to wipe their balls with
Then whinge about how theyre getting ****** because theyre only taking 40% of all sales from the gig aswell as their original fee.

show organizers
people who never, EVER respond to emails, Facebook messages, and phone calls,
often cancel low-importance gigs due to ****** planning,
often even expect musicians to play for little to nothing, sometimes even charging *them* to play

How the hell am I supposed to establish credibility as a band when I have to deal with people like this?

The industry has been in a downturn for the better part of a decade (at least in the states). The money's just not there anymore. Unfortunately it's the sound companies who always seem to take the worst of the cut. It's why I had to find a new job. We were having to bid less than 50% of what we should have just to get the gig because god forbid the bands or organizers took a pay cut.

Really sucked too. I loved that job =\

You don't have companies that supply the PA's and people to run them? Or are they just individuals who have the systems and overcharge for their usage over there?

PA is usually from a single individual. Depending on what you want and who you go to the price can vary wildly. I have a guy who will do a simple set up for £60 - 12 track mixer, bass bins + tops, lights, mics etc... While i have another guy for bigger set ups - £400 for a 32 channel digital mixer, FOH, and gear.

There are PA hire companies but theyre ridiculously expensive - they only make money out of weddings and corporate events because theyre the only people stupid enough to pay for it. £600 for a 4 track mixer and 2 bass bins/ tops is an outrage.

A lot of what we did was just backline work and providing a sound tech for various bands that did have in house systems. But we did do a lot of festivals as well. This pic was from a private party we did sometime in 2007(i think). Stage sound and lights were ours. It was on the larger end of our small sized stage configurations.

*Current populist musicians
I bring my own gear, and don't ask much for a gig because I came into the business knowing it would not earn much. I make my money in studio recording; gigs in a band are usually just for fun, with the perk of making maybe $100.
And then there are these stupid ***** that pull this **** and give the rest of us a bad name.

Its a tough industry - the bands that ask for this stuff are usually really well known in the local area and sell out often, so they can get away with demanding this sort of stuff.

Only reason it sometimes pisses me off is because sometimes i've hired a band to come play 3 counties away where no one has heard of them and they requested the same ****. I told them they're having a laugh - the gig won't be spectacular but it does build up a more national awareness. Usually I can negotiate them down to £10 each for rider and a fee that is double the cost of them coming here.

Thats because theyre extremely good and are crowd pleasers, and bring in money.

Find yourself a manager who has more **** than you have, and get him to pay for stuff. Best bet is to find a band that seems financially fit, work out who their manager is and try to play wherever he picks up new acts.

Either way, you shouldn't have to play more than a few free gigs, otherwise people start taking the piss. Get friendly with local bands.

The way we pulled it off at first was mainly through the open mics at various SamAshes. They give each member of a band a $20 gift card just for showing up, and after a while of going to multiple stores for it each week, that accumulates and any equipment you need other than instruments themselves (in our case 5 SM57s, two JBL speakers, and a Hartke combo amp) is pretty much paid for.
