Actually Smart cars are surprisingly safe, they have strengthening bars that run all across the cars, notice the frame around the door is pretty much still intact, while most cars are designed to crumple in that area, obviously a Smart car can't crumple so they put in the metal bars.
Crumpling also takes away a lot of the force, hence why it works that way. If the vehicle is hit and the force isnt lessened then it can prove fatal. So while they dont go crunch like regular cars, they do have a higher mortality rate.
Basically, you are right in the regards of vehicle strength, but wrong in the safety of it.
They are actually really strong, usually come out about the same or better than an average sedan in a similar accident. Downside is, however, that the car can't crumple to absorb the energy of the collision so they tend to bounce back a lot, so you can get whiplash or other injuries in a collision.
I know it's been posted a couple times already, but smart car frames are surprisingly strong. You can hit a deer with a tahoe and it'd be ****** up too
i once hit a deer with my car
was about 60km/h it was dark as **** and pretty misty
that ****** destroyed my frontbumper + front lights and run away like it was nothing...
he even flew some meters through the air and landed on all 4 feet
